lame lactation room

I just went to go check out the lactation rooms at work so I would know what the setup was when I came back.....

Its like they looked at the bare minimum of what was required and then thought about ways to make them as unpleasant as possible. Its a curtained off area in a women's locker room. I'd call it "semi-private".

There is an online signup to use it, and hopefully they will be less busy when I come back to work otherwise its going to be really difficult to pump often enough. And definitely going to be inconvenient times.

Straight back chair (folding type) with a coffee table height table, so its not even going to be possible to have the pump level with me......or have a surface to work on while I pump. In a sub-basement so no internet/phone access, even if I brought my own laptop. Dim lighting. I'm also told that if someone were to bring LO to work so I could BF, there is no where private I would be allowed to do it (no babies in lactation rooms). I could nurse in a patient waiting area "if I covered up". Lame.

Yes, there is an outlet, a sink, and a chair.

But really, this is a hospital. The lounges are much nicer. Couldn't they do better? So disapointed.

Re: lame lactation room

  • That is lame as hell. Why can't you bring a baby in there?

  • That blows.  I hate that it seems like a total after-thought.  But it's also really indicative of our culture's attitudes towards working mothers (not to mention breastfeeding).

  • I would bring the lacking amenities to the attention of whom ever is "in charge"

Personally, I'd be pumping wherever I pleased and making sure that it didn't interfere with my work. But I'm a bit of a rebel. Also, "covering up" is so not my thing when it comes to breastfeeding but I'm generally a very modest person.

  • I always pumped in a call room when I was BFing my first.  The main hospital where i worked had a lovely lactation room with recliners, frig, and lockers.  But, it was a good 20 min walk from where I spent my days in the OR so I never saw the inside of it.  At our surgery center, I pumped in the director's office.  I asked him when I first showed up there "where is a private room with a lock and an outlet, where I can pump a few times a day?"  He said "ummm, i guess my office?"  So I took over his office several times a day whenever I was over there :)

  • Thanks guys....I was worried I was going to be flamed for complaining because truthfully it is "adequate" just not ideal/desireable. This place has a "work/life initiative department" and so many other parts of the hospital are so nice and thoughtfully designed that I just expected more.

I am definitely going to complain, but I feel a little weird about doing it before I've even used the room. I just wish there was a desk, or even a computer, and maybe even a locker to keep my pump down there. You'd think they would want me to work while I pumped.

Call rooms are an interesting idea, especially since I only need it during the day......I wish I felt comfortable enough to pump in my office, but its basically a public space with 12+ workstations and a variety of people all day.

  • Call rooms are definitely the way to go!  Some of ours were swipe access and some were key though, so make sure to hang a sign if it's a room you think someone else might enter during the day.  Our call rooms by the ORs were just off the resident lounge, and since I pumped for a year my fellow residents at the time got verrrry comfortable just coming up to the door and starting a conversation with me while I was pumping (especially weird since my program was mostly guys!).

ETA: I once picked up my son from daycare and brought him back for an evening "mandatory lecture" at the hospital.  He was 3 mos old so I figured I'd just nurse him through it.  Afterwards one of the guys said, "wow, your baby sure was quiet. But why does he have to sleep with a blanket over his head?"  I figured if he couldn't tell what I was doing, I must've gotten good at being discrete.

  • I will be returning to work at a nursing home, and they dont even have a lactation room. I asked my boss about it and she said simply "Well, we will figure out somewhere to put you" gee thanks! <sarcasm>
