NSAIFR: w/o power about 16 hrs-- fridge/freezer?

We lost power from the storm from about 10am yesterday morning to about 2am this morning. WWYD about the food in the fridge/freezer? I didn't get up at 2am to feel all the stuff in the freezer. The milk, cheese, etc. in the fridge smell/taste fine, but I don't want to make the kids or us sick. I'd hate to waste all that food, though. WWYD?

Thanks!

  • When we had a hurricane and lost power for about that long, I did not open our fridge and freezer until the power was back on and all of our food was still cold and some even still frozen.  I don't remember throwing alot of it out.

  • Personally, I would throw out th highly perishable stuff... Milk, lunch meat, raw meat/poultry in the fridge, etc. The cheese I would probably keep if it looks/smells ok.

If your milk is bad, you'll know it.  Just give the sniff test or have a small sip before serving to anyone else.  It may go back faster than the printed expiry date, but as long as it's not sour now, you're probably okay.
  • Thanks, all!
