NOT taking bottle - anyone else? advice???

So - we've tried most all bottles out there. Like, seriously. DD just prefers the boob! I so VERY very much want her to be comfy w/a bottle. It would just free up so much of my time - I could spend more 1 on 1 time w/my 3 year old son - I could take a trip somewhere even!! (we fly for free and I so need a sanity saving weekend!)...  She's 4 months old now, can I safely bet that she's just NEVER going to take a bottle - if she won't by now???

And yes - we've tried bottle warmers, DH doing it w/me gone.. etc etc etc....

I forget when milk is regularly taken from a straw/sippy cup.. isn't it like 7 or so months? I totally am spacing..

  • Do you give her the bottle? I don't ever bottle-feed E, because I only want her associating me with boob. So my Mom & husband are the bottle feeders.

  • My SIL got my 10 month old neice to take a bottle after being EBF that whole time...it was a struggle at first but it finally worked out.

Hardly ever. It's my DH. I am out/nowhere near. But, ideally, I would need to be able to do it eventually - when I am done bf'ing... I am a SAHM, so I need to be the primary bottle-giver.

  • We started weaning LO about 2 weeks ago - it's a bit of a process and can involve some crying but it's working out for us now and I'm starting to be able to mix in bottle and breast without him getting upset.

Here's what I would recommend - we didn't do it exactly this way, but close to. I think it would have been better if we had:

Start by replacing one specific feeding a day with the bottle - late afternoon/evening bottle is probably best since your milk supply is usually lower then anyways (at least this is what I have read).  LO will likely protest but will figue out if she wants to eat then she needs to take the bottle.  Once comfortable with that bottle feeding, start trying to give her a bottle yourself at that time. Then replace another meal with bottle and so on. What I've read is that the last meal to go should be the morning feeding.

  • Ugh, we have this same problem.  DD is in daycare part-time and even though the first two weeks were rocky, she eventually figured out that she has no choice but the bottle while she's there.  However, as soon as I pick her up, she almost "attacks" me, trying to nurse through my shirt.  It's as if she just takes enough to tide her over and waits for me to return.

Yesterday I had to go to an event and DH watched her by himself for the first time in awhile.  She screamed and refused to take a bottle from him for the first three hours I was gone.  It was awful for both of them and put a huge damper on an otherwise great day for me because I felt so bad for him.  We definitely need to figure this out.

  • I wish mine would take the bottle... she did for the first few weeks because I couldn't get her to latch but now that she's had the boob she ISN'T going back. We've tried everything but here's what she thinks of bottles:

She won't suck on them but chews on the nipple and wastes most of the milk... this was when she was hungry too but it's like she couldn't/wouldn't suck properly. Aiming to help her use a glass when we start solids at 6 months and hoping eventually we can give her a bit of milk that way. Good luck!

  • My LO had been taking a bottle here and there from 3 weeks on.  About a month ago, she decided she had had enough of that and started to refuse.  She was holding it on her part time days at daycare until I got there and giving DH a run for his money if he attempted at home.  We ended up having to take her mind off of the feeding, by doing something like walking around outside or dancing and then when she was completely calm and settled, sneaking it in.  She's getting back to accepting them withough quite so much effort!

  • I had the same trouble. I finally made the hole in the nipple a bit bigger, and he finally took it.
