Obadiah

My husband and I are planning on naming our baby (if it's a boy) Obadiah. I'm just curious what people think of it. A few people have told us they love it, but most just don't say anything. We've already chosen the name for sure, I'm just curious to see how people will react to his name.

  • It's very old fashioned. Which is not neccessarily a bad thing. The name is definitely not my style though.

  • I had a student who had this name but went by Obi... I thought it was cute but it reminded me of Obi Wan Kenobi from Star Wars.  (Can you tell I grew up with boy cousins in the late 70s/ early 80s?)

  • Honest opinion it's kinda weird. But do you care what people think?

  • I love the name, its very biblical.... But the obi wan connection might bother him/you as he grows up.

  • I'm not American and I've never heard the name before. For one that doesn't really know or understand it, it sounds a little ridiculous. Excuse my honesty.

  • I really like it, but that might be because I'm super religious. The only reason I wouldn't use it myself is because my boy middle name also starts with an O.

  • I know people with that name, then again I live in Israel, so here its pronounced Ovadiyah.  If you two are confident and comfortable with the name you picked, then go for it.  Our baby is also going to have an uncommon biblical name, but we love it so thats what matters.  :)

  • We had a husky named this growing up so it holds a good place in my heart. We called him Obie for short and he was sweet and lovable.

  • I like it, actually. My first inclination was to dislike it, but even in a few minutes it has grown on me.

My initial thought was, "Like the villain in Iron Man?" but that wouldn't really turn me off from using it, especially since it'll be old news to your son once he's old enough to care.

  • I think it's a fine name...for when he's a grandpa and on Social Security.

  • I love it!  When it comes to names, anything goes these days.  So I say go for it.

NMS. And it reminds me of "The Simpsons" (The Simpsons' Springfield was founded by Jebediah Obadiah Zachariah Jedediah Springfield).

Totally NMS.  And this post cracked me up- I never knew Jebediah Springfield's full name!

  • Will you be calling him Obadiah, or will you use a nickname.

    I love Obi!!

  • We'll be using both Obadiah and Obi. We had already discussed people calling him obi wan. We both are star wars fans and although I don't want people always calling him that I think it's kind of cool. Thanks everyone for your input. It's nice to know what people think of the name.
