Anyone use the Flylady routines for housework?

I've decided that I need some help/motivation in whipping this place into shape. It's a bit cheesey, but I figure it will work even if I never get dressed "down to lace up shoes".Pretty much, she'll tell me which rooms to focus on and get me in the habit of keeping up on dishes, laundry, etc. The house needs a good dose of uncluttering, and it will help with that too.

I started yesterday and am going to ease into it over the next week.

Re: Anyone use the Flylady routines for housework?

  • I've tried doing her routine a few times. I really like it! I just got her book and made my "control journal". We just moved into a new place so I'm starting again when we get settled in there. I tried doing her 27 fling a few times a week while we were getting ready to move as well. Good luck! Hope I actually can keep with it this time.

ETA: I don't like her get dressed to lace up shoes thing.  We don't wear shoes in our house.  I figure I'll modify that one.

I own one pair of lace-up shoes, and I never wear them.  I think it's alright to modify that one!

  • I do to a certain extent.  Her emails got to be too much.  I still do the get dressed, shine my sink, swish the bathroom, start the laundry, etc bit but I don't do the zones and stuff.  I started following something similar BUT that I don't have to check in her website/email every day.

    I blogged about it, if you're interested. :)  https://munnfunn.blogspot.com/2011/08/clean-organized-home.html

Thanks for sharing your blog post!  I've tried to start a Home Management journal, but couldn't figure out how to organize it effectively (even after reading tons of bloggers' tips).  I like what you've done with yours.

I'm also glad to see that I'm not the only crazy one already planning a first birthday party.  ;)  I kind of cheated though; I found a theme I loved on Hostess with the Mostess and decided to steal their ideas!

Email me if you want more tips or photos of how I did mine. I got lazy in posting and didnt give much info!! I'm obsessed with mine, I use it so much now!

I want to know which bday them you are using! I had one as soon as I found out I was pregnant (a Southern shrimp boil!) but someone I know IRL just used it, so I am going to have to start all over!!

I tried it for 1 day. I love the idea, but I wasn't motivated. I've actually been thinking about trying again though. Let me get my back-to-work routine down first though.

Try the Just Mommies link on my blog, it was SO MUCH easier for me. Much less overwhelming.

I have a confession for y'all....I've had a cleaning lady in some form or another for my entire life (my mom when I was little, then an actual cleaning lady when I grew up). This May was the first time I had to clean my house. I actually don't mind it right now while I am at home. But last week I had to call my mom to ask her if I was mopping correctly.  And I have to google sometimes to find out how to do stuff...like how to clean my hard wood floors and how to best sanitize the sinks and toilets.

  • I've just signed up for the "digest" emails - so it's just one a day and I can skim to the bits I want to read.

I'm not sure I get the home journal thing, honestly. I don't have to write myself a note to remember to get dressed in the morning... I'm definitely modifying it as I see fit. I really don't have the negative self-talk / self esteem issues she seems to also be targeting. I just have an internet addiction and a packrat husband.

This is me. If I'd just quit procrastinating I wouldn't need my list of daily chores and a checklist of what I should do each day, housework wise.

  • I do like the justmommies calendar, though. Hmm... that might be a better fit. It seems a little less... crazy. I like the general idea of the flylady stuff, but she's a bit over the top on the damn acronyms and loving-yourself-to-death-shiznit.

I compared the Just Mommies to Fly Lady....they basically took her routines, home blessing, zones, etc and just put it in a format where you don't have to keep track of it yourself.  The home blessing is spread throughout the weekly tasks, zone stuff is done on the monthly calendar, and you still make your bed, shine your sink and swipe the bathroom every day.  I just like having to look at the one page printed out for the month.  And I wasted time on her emails, even though I got the digest and just skimmed it.  It was also too brainwashy for me.

  • I checked out her website, but it was too overwhelming to me.  Since I'm going back to work in a week and am still taking care of most of the housework, I took all the chores that needed to be done each week and assigned them to a day, based on whether I work that day or not.  I tried to bunch like activities together to make it more practical and I posted it on the fridge.  I have been following it for two weeks and so far, so good.  If DH asks if he can help (or he's being lazy watching TV and I think he needs a chore), I just point to the chart.  For me, not having to think and remember what needs to be done each week makes it much easier to actually do it.
