Did you have your house baby proof for your home visit?

We are getting ready for our classes so we are not at the visit yet but my case worker is working quickly for us so I was wondering should we baby proof our house before the home visit? we have started just didnt know if we should have it all done. I'm a little nervous to be honest about the home visit

  • Ask your caseworker what they expect.  That's what you're paying them the big bucks for.  :)

  • for our home visit...she didn't expect our house to be baby proof but she did want us to tell her what we will do to baby proof once the baby starts crawling.

  • Everyone's nervous about the home visit. I was OOT for work right before ours and DH cleaned things I had never heard of.

Like MrsB said, ask the caseworker. Ours wasn't expected to be babyproof (because really, what can a nb get into?), but each one is a little different and it's good to know ahead of time.

  • That is true there isnt a lot a newborn can get into I guess I'm nervous of a slew of things. I'm worried about how many pets we have I'm trying to make sure the house stays perfect all the time. I will ask my worker however shes on vacation this week and it was just something I was thinking about when I was thinking about what our classes would be like

  • I know exactly what you're gong through. I'm worried about ours too... we have a lot of cleaning to do and my father in law was a hoarder for many years so we have a lot of clutter to sort through. Good luck with your home visit!! From what I've heard, they are not expecting perfection at all, just a relatively tidy home that is suitable for a child and can be childproofed upon adoption approval.

  • It's definitely normal to be nervous before a home visit :)  We didn't have to baby proof, but I've read that some people were required to do it.
  • Definitely ask your case worker what they expect. I think every organization is different.  Our homestudy will consist of two visits; we already had the first.  Before she comes again we need to get smoke detectors in every bedroom (we already have them on each floor, but were surprised with each bedroom).  We also need to put our cleaning supplies up high, and get a couple fire extinguishers.  She also wanted to make sure any alcohol was out of reach for a a child, we keep some liquor in the house and it's already stored up high.

  • Unfortunately we had to baby proof our house.  But I would call and ask because it is a kind of a pain for a newborn....

  • They were ok with us telling them how we would baby proof and buying a few things (outlet protectors and gates were the two main ones) but we didn't have to install them.

Everyone is super nervous about the home visit and everyone always says it wasn't bad at all!  GL!

  • We probably did more than what was needed, but that is because we also have to be licensed as foster parents in our state (WI).   We had this whole list to check off for the fostering, but honestly, she barely looked at it.

  • My adoption coordinator suggested that I put outlet covers in the outlets.  She said I didn't need to do anything else until the baby came.  She told me to tell the CW my plans for future proofing like safety latches on cabinets, a gate at the stairs, etc.  One thing she said was they like to look in your cabinets to see what kind of food you buy to see if you eat healthy and if the baby will eat healthy.  I don't know if they will do that in your state or not but it's something to consider.  Good luck!!
