Postpartum Depression

Any breastfeeders out there?

I think that I have had PPD all along.  I was on Celexa for 7 years prior to pregnancy and then got off when we were TTC.  I was fine during preg but since my DS has been born, I have been feeling ridiculous, sad, paranoid etc.  I am going to call the Dr tomorrow.  I am concerned though because I still pump.  I have read that Zoloft is the safest for breastfeeding.  Thoughts?  TIA!

  • Zoloft is recommended for breastfeeding mothers.  I BFed DD1 for 9 months, but couldn't with the twins, which was extremely disappointing.  Ultimately, your family and you deserve for you to be the best mommy that you can be.  If that means that you make the decision to stop BFing in order to start taking medication, know that that's OK.  Your son had 6 months of BM which is GREAT!

Were you on an antidepressant while breastfeeding your DD1? I would like to keep pumping while on the med if possible.

  • I was diagnosed with PPD/PPA around my sons 7 month bday.  I had nursed him since day 1.  I continued to nurse on Celexa until he was about 9 months old, then I decided to quit b/c the meds weren't doing anything for me.  I had to be put on something stronger and an additional med that I wasn't allowed to nurse on.  Good luck w/ your decision. You have done great!

  • I BF on Zoloft and I'm doing much better.  I spoke to my pedi about it before I started and they assured me it was fine and zoloft is very common for moms with PPD who also BF.

  • I BF and am on Zoloft...it is safe, I would talk to your doc about what your options are.
