Success after IF

WhiteysWifey

I wanted to ask you about quilting. Have you taken classes or were you fortunate to learn from an older generation? I'm very very very interested in doing it but don't know where to start. I've "pieced together" (machine) blankets before and hand tied them - I guess you can call that "quilting". My problem is - the stitiching comes out eventually (with washes) and I don't know how to prevent that.

Also, I saw you mentioned on your blog about sending your Xmas blanket out to be machine long arm quilted. I have a store bought blanket I want this done with - do you send it out to somewhere local or a national place?

Any input would be awesome!

Re: WhiteysWifey

  • I actually taught myself. I did take 1 hand quilting class at the local quilt shop, with a much older lady from my mom's church, but I've only hand quilted one thing. I have hand tied a few quilts and as far as I know they haven't come untied (it's all in the knot). I usually tie at least 3 or 4 knots and then put fray-chek on them.

The big thing with quilting is using a 1/4" pressure foot, which insures that you have enough fabric that stitches don't rip out, also all patterns are 1/4" seam, unless otherwise stated.

I found a lady through my local quilt shop who does long arm quilting and mail them to her, but she hasn't responded to my most recent emails, so I'm thinking she's not doing them anymore.

Honestly a REAL quilt shop (not a joann's or hobby lobby) is your greatest resource. They'll have lessons and be able to help you with things. Also American Patchwork and Quilting magazine is a great resource too.
