BAAAAAACK PAAAAAIN

I can barely walk at this point. My lower back on the left side, (right above the butt) hurts every time I take a step. I don't know how to help it. I refuse to sit around and let it get the best of me, but DH is fussing becuase I look like I'm in pain. I am but my weekends are too valuable to just lay on the couch and complain. HELP!!!

  • Oh no Cam that sucks! I don't know what it is but I have had the same pains occasionally... But only at the end of a long day. I can usually sleep it off. Hopefully it is that easily cured for you!

  • I swear by my chiropractor for my sciatic nerve pain.  I haven't been able to get there in over a week and as a result I am on the couch with an ice pack and no feeling down my right leg from the nerve situation.  I have been walking around for the past week with one leg randomly giving out etc.  Sciatica is a PITA.

I may have to look into one. This pain is not going to help my extremely short temper with my students. Poor kids

  • I completely sympathize with you.  I had a spinal fusion because of a car accident 11 years ago, and weather is just unbearable for me.  I have a small pharmacy of pain relievers but none are ok to take/use during pregnancy (muscle relaxers, lidocaine patches, prescription ibuprofen).  And with Irene steadily on her way here, I'm completely useless.

I wish I had some suggestions to make it go away in the short term that are pregnancy safe...

  • Chiropractor!!! Seriously. I have the same thing. Usually it's something in my knees that's out of whack and causing it. I was literally crying last week and holding on to walls to walk. My husband had to stay home from work to take care of our daughter while I made an "emergency" trip to our chiropractor. I've been fine ever since. I do usually go every two weeks (or once a week if I need it!).

  • Have you tried a shower?  I have had this a couple times and a warm shower has helped.
  • I get this randomly. It sounds like sciatic nerve pain. I've never had it before getting pregnant so I assume it's the baby choosing a really poor place to hang out. Hope it gets better for you.

  • I'm having bad sciatica this pregnancy as well. I've tried baths, chiro, massage and nothing helps. Mine goes down my right side. It's miserable, I feel your pain!
  • A maternity pillow and switching which side I'm sleeping on is helping a bit...still in some pain though and thinking it might be time to visit the chiropractor...
  • That stinks!  I can totally empathize with you.  I suffered from severe back pain for years (bulging disc at l4/l5), and the chiropracter has helped me tremendously.  My back has been doing great, however this weekend it started hurting in my lower right back, almost in my hip bone.  It even hurts when I lay down.

.... and to top it off, I get on a plane in 2 hours for a 4.5 hour flight across country for work.

Here are a few things that are helping me.

    1. I sit on the edge of a couch and bend my right foot on my left knee (kind of like crossing your legs like a guys does).  Then I gently lean forward.  It stretches your gluts and lower back.  Rotate sides.

    2.  Sit indian style and rotate looking behind you on each side gently.  Do 2 sets of 10.

    3.  I like to do cat/cow yoga poses.  This helps relieve pressure.

    4. Depending on where you're at with your inflamation, I will use heat or ice on the inflamed area.  If it's fairly fresh, ice will work with swelling of the tissue and inflamed nerves.  15 minutes on, 15 off. Do this for 4 rounds.  Heat is better later.

    5.  Do try to rest... as obnoxious as it is.  Trust me, I do get it.  However, most back pain will get worse if you ignore it.  It just gets more inflamed, and if it's affecting one of your nerves, it will just get more aggravated.

    Good luck!
