Traveling with Toddler-DSLR/Carry On Bag Packing ?

I have a travel camera backpack (padding for camera etc).  But I don't know if I will be able to take that on our trip later this year since I have to really pack my bag with all of DS' stuff and it won't fit in the pouch on the camera bag.

I have a smaller camera bag that will fit the DSLR but I doubt it will go in the backpack I was planning on using to fit our carry on stuff.

How do you mamma's pack everything-I am definitely an overpacker and will need to keep things to a minimum this trip.

I will have an E-Reader plus one or two books for myself (it's a 16 hour flight and I'm scared my ereader will run out of batteries, a portable DVD player (most probably), my DSLR, and then DS food, diapers and toys.  I guess I'll need an extra t shirt for myself as well.

We are taking the Ergo with us to wear in the airport/on the plane, a baby harness for the airport and a very cheap stroller (gate checked).

My mother is coming with me-I don't know if she normally takes a carry-on but she definitely will in this case but I cannot count on her having space for our stuff.

  • I know on the flights we have taken we have each gotten one carry on and one personal item, so the camera bag could be your personal item. You can also check with your mom to see what she's taking along. We usually each have a backpack, and we also bring a cooler for DD's milk. Sometimes we have a smallish duffel bag instead of one of the backpacks because we always bring at least one change of clothes for each of us on the plane (and several for DD). I am definitely an over-packer, but I have been trying very hard to work on this!

  • When we flew in April, I had my backpack and personal item!

  • Even if your DS does not have a seat, you are allowed a diaper bag for him that does not count towards your carry-on/personal item allowance.

    That's an awesome tip!

Personally, we never check luggage - we even did a 1.5 week trip through Europe with just carry ons for DH and I and a purse for me. When DD flies with us, I usually split her stuff between my carry on and DH's, then we also bring backpacks and mine is filled with my stuff (I put my empty purse in my suitcase) - purse contents, DSLR (the only accessory I bring is my Lightscoop, and I just use my 50mm), and random snacks/toys for DD.
