Baby Names

full name that has Cole as nickname?

I've always loved the name Cole, but I feel like it's more of a nn than a full name... any ideas on full names that could use Cole as a nickname? The only one I can think of is Colton... I love the name Colton, but we have two fairly close friends who both have boys named Colton, so it's out for us.

  • Colton is only boys name that comes to mind but I've known several guys who are named Cole.  I like it.

Have you seen the Richard Dreyfus movie Mr Holland's Opus?  His son's name is Cole.

  • I had a male student named Kole. It didn't seem like a nickname at all. I loved it.

  • I have a great uncle named Coleman.  He has never gone by Cole, but I think that would be the natural nn.   I agree with Nicholas too or Colton too.
  • Collier is a very cool name

  • In Mr. Holland's Opus, Cole's name is Coletraine (sp?).  I second Nicholas.  I've also heard Colson.

It's Coltrane after John Coltrane.  But I doubt the OP is a big enough fan of jazz music to go there lol

  • I know a guy named Coleman but goes by Cole.
  • I went to elementary school with a Coulter, but he went by Cole.

Wait a minute... I have Ann Coulter warning bells going off in my head now!

    Forget I said anything!!!
  • My nephew is Cole. He is one of 3 in his class; he's 12 and very much the diplomat, so he told his teacher, just call me Richard, it will be less confusing. (Richard is his first name). I think it works fine as a stand alone name.

  • My cousins name is Coleson.

  • Coleman. But I also know a guy whose name is Cole. I think it's fine as a standalone name.

  • I have always thought of it as a stand-alone name, and formal enough to use as a grown-up professional.
  • Coulson is what came to my mind (it's my grandpa's name), but that is very similar to Colton so you probably won't use that.

What's wrong with just Cole.  I feel that there is nothing wrong with naming your baby something nickname-ish.  My sister's name is Connie, not Constance and honestly Connie suits her better.

So I say just use Cole.

  • Nicholas

    Coleman

    Colburn

    Colton

  • The one that comes to my mind is Colebert... but I don't love it.

I love Nicholas though and never would have thought of that!

  • I definitely think it works as a standalone name. It's my BIL's name, and DH's coworker just had a baby and named him Cole, too.

I think it was the kid in the Sixth Sense too. ;)

  • I had a student named Coleman who went by Cole.

  • I think it sounds nice as a first name or middle name on its own

  • I know about 5 Coles(2 of which are my cousins), all of whose full names are Cole. One of my Cole cousins goes by Coley after my grandpa (who got nicknamed Coley because he had black hair).

I know a couple Colton's, but they just go by Colton.

I see Cole as a stand alone first name.

  • I love Cole as a stand alone name, and I'm very partial to it as you can see by my sig ;)

I will admit that when I was pg, I was second guessing our choice, and tried to talk DH into using Nicolas, nn Cole. He refused, and now I'm so glad he did.

  • I knew a little boy named Colden which I thought was adorable. He went by the full name, but Cole could certainly be a nn for it.

  • Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions! I think if we decide to go with Cole, we'll just use Cole as the full name... I've never heard the name Coleman before, but apparently it's fairly popular. All I think of when I hear it is the Coleman camping lanterns. I also really liked the suggestion of Coulter. I used to babysit a Coulter years ago and had completely forgotten about that name until it was mentioned here. Thanks again! That's why this board is the best!
