Just changed the channel...give me some background info...
My cousin married a girl from India and had 3 days of lavish festivities. It was funto see something so culturally different. And the garba(?) was a blast!!
ETA: granted I know its different...just about it being a different culture and I think we can learn a lot from it.

So the dresses, make up and dancing are redic, which is what I thought the show was going to about. But they also discuss that the 'travelers' prefer to live in trailers, however the towns are making laws against allowing the trailer parks and limiting their "community living". Also many vendors will refuse to host a gypsy wedding. And in the last episode they had a fair and several people were arrested for not real reason... or so says the show.
I ended up watching an episode of this and I couldn't look away lol. I was shocked seeing those little girls dressed like hookers and dancing like strippers!! The one episode I watched the girl had a wedding gown that had lights in it. It was sad seeing their "homes" being destroyed, I don't understand why they are so hated?

I *think* they have a history or at least a reputation of being kind of like scam artists, or theives. But I'm not sure.
I just turned it on too, what makes these people "gypsy's?" My H calls me gypsy sometimes but thats only because he saw it in Borat
When I hear "gpysy" I often think someone who moves a lot.
Thats what I think too, they call theselves travelers. On anearlier episode they talked about how much they would hate to live in a house or apartment.

*Stupid question of the night: Where do they live then?

In trailers and they just all settle at a place untill they get thrown out I guess.

No, They specifically look to uy trailers without bathrooms because it is a waste of space, and considered dirty to go to the bathroom inside. Idk where they shower... good question.

I know this is late, but kind of interesting. We have a big gypsy population where I work (North Augusta, SC). They are Irish Travelers. Their culture is very interesting. The women get pulled out of school at a young age. They often get married in their early/mid teens and always to another gypsy. Therefore, they are basically inbred. I know that sounds awful. Anyways, they live in a neighborhood called Murphy Village. They built HUGE houses, but then board them up and live in trailers in front of the house for 3 years. That is some kind of tradition for them. The men do blue collar work and some are scam artists. I would never hire a gypsy to pour concrete, for example, b/c I have heard stories about their scams.
They are easily recognizable out in about (at the mall, movies, etc) b/c the women and children have BIG hair, LOTS of make up! It's crazy. They also have strange accents. All the ones I have met have been very nice.
Anyways, just wanted to add my 2 cents. I never heard of gypsies until we moved here and I just find their culture to be so fascinating.
I don't know how close to fact it is but I think they did a lot of research but the show The Riches was based on Irish Travelers in the US. It was a good show too.

Yikes!! So it's a little different than I thought it would be. I apparently don't know much about gypsies.
The bridesmaid dresses she chose are HIDEOUS!!!!!
