extended BFers--where do sippies fit into the picture?

i'm considering BFing my LO past twelve months, and i'm not sure where sippy cups fit into the picture. did you give your LO BM in a sippy, or any other liquids in a sippy? my LO has been getting water in a sippy for months, and he doesn't mind it but he also isn't very good at it--a lot of the water ends up on his shirt.

TIA for any experiences!

  • We are down to just the evening session, but I stopped pumping at a year (hallelujah!), so we transitioned to WCM in a sippy at that time.  We mixed WCM with BM at first to make the transition, progressing from mostly BM to mostly WCM.  So she gets BM when she nurses at night, and WCM for the rest of her milk.  We also give water in sippies.

  • I droped pumping at 11 months so there is no BM to give in a sippy, but I know a few moms have done that. I normally give him water or WCM in one. When DS was 12-18 months he still nursed 4+ times a day, and had maybe 1 sippy of WCM and 1-2 of water. Now that he is 2+ he drinks mostly WCM, water or juice with on nursing 1-2 times a day. When he is really sick that number does go up after 1 yr you can really nurse as little or as much as you and LO want.
  • At first, I replaced nursing sessions with sippies of WCM.  Then, we moved past that to just doing WCM in sippies at meal time, water the rest of the day...and BF'd around that.

Eventually, we got down to morning and bedtime nursing, and then just bedtime...then weaned at 14.5 months due to pregnancy and loss of interest on her part.

  • We still nurse whenever she wants, but give sippies of milk (mostly BM and a small amt of WCM. Have a huge freezer stash to burn through) at meals, and have a sippy of water available to her all the time.
