Question about the New Horizon non refrigerated milk

We don't usually buy this but with Irene coming I figured I'd run out to the store to see if there was any left and low and behold there were 3 three packs on the back of the top shelf (I had to get an employee to climb up and get them).  Well, I just got back to the office and thought to look at the expiration date and two of them say best if used by April 2011!  I'll certainly return them if we don't need them but....if we do lose power and can't get milk for a day or two, what do you think?  Is this something like it will taste better in April or will it make her sick?

Re: Question about the New Horizon non refrigerated milk

  • I think it just probably is a taste thing. I'd keep 'em and just give a quick sniff before feeding.

  • So they expired this past April?

No...I'd chunk them.  No way would I give a dairy product that expired almost 5 months ago.

  • When in doubt THROW IT OUT.  No way would I let anyone ingest this milk.
    Wheee!

  • There is other shelf stable "milk" out there. If you have a whole foods, you ought to be able to find a ton (rice, soy, almond).

Also, how about a cooler with a block of dry ice? Don't put anything liquid too close to it - it'll freeze and only open when necessary. Surround the dry ice with regular ice and you'll be good to go for days if you have a good cooler with a decent seal.
  • I'm replying really late, but that shelf-stable stuff lasts for AGES. By that, I mean that the expiration dates are usually very far off when you buy them. Considering you had to get help to get them down, I'm guessing they've been up there for a long, long, long time. We have some that we bought sometime in the spring, and it is expiring at the end of January.

I would return them. No way would I drink them or give them to LO.
