SOOOOO embarrassed (and anemia question)

Oh gosh... I just posted this on the Jan '12 board without realizing I was on the wrong board. D'oh! Oh well... at least we can all sympathize with making mistakes, right? :-p My original post:

Hey Ladies,

My standard pregnancy bloodwork (blood type, measles immunity, etc) came back and things are looking good... except that I'm quite anemic. At this point my MW just wants to me eat high-iron foods with every meal. If I drop slightly lower, I won't be able to give birth out of the hospital. :(

Has anyone else experienced this (or is experiencing this)? Any food suggestions?

It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • I'd recommend seeing a nutritionist or a doctor about it. I know there are iron supplements but you should talk to your medical provider about that.

  • I keep being taken to the January '12 board, too.  So don't worry, it's not your fault!

I don't have any experience with anemia. Sorry!

I was anemic with my DD and just took Iron pill suppliments...basically just an Iron vitamin pill...help maintain my anemia...and had no other issues. I would suggest doing that honestly since it is the easiest way to make sure you are getting the Iron you need.

  • ive been anemic since the start of time, iron pills help ask your doc to suggest one or perscribe it for yah otherwise theres tons of high iron foods to choose from that you should just add to your dailey routine.. salad peanuts beans red meat artichokes.. just stay up on it and drink lots o water

  • Im an oncology/hematology RN and we treat ob patients a lot. You need to start on an iron supplement and if it doesn't help than you can see a hematologist. I don't know what all they tested to call it anemia. Some will just say if your hemoglobin is low you are anemic. They are also different things like ferritin and b12 levels to check as well.  We also give IV iron if the pills don't help enough. Very common issue, I know MW like to take the less drastic approach vs MD but there is something that can be done and you can still have your birthing center/home birth experience.
