any advice RE utility companies

We had a big storm this past Tuesday, and when I got home, I noticed our power was out. When it came back on, the TV would not work, the modem, the dish receiver, the stove, all three white noise machines, and my alarm clock... and worst of all my Keurig do not work!

There were 5 breakers flipped on our fuse box, and a neighbor mentioned seeing lightening strike the transformer box on our street.

My question is, wouldn't the electric company have some responsibility in helping us replace these items? We have already shelled out close to 1k getting the oven, modem ect replaced. I would think that there should be some protection against a surge like this right? We had many of the items plugged into surge protector strips because our house has not many outlets. Even with that precaution, we still had trouble.

Re: any advice RE utility companies

  • My gut says no, they are not responsible.  It was an act of God, not a negligence on their part.

    What a bummer!

  • I wouldn't think so. I think this is what "surge protectors" are for (not just a strip plug in but the actual surge protector) and GFI breaker outlets (like in a kitchen for your Kureig -sp).

Does your your kitchen have GFI's? Its code in the two places I live/own.

I would contact Dish about your receiver.

    Good Luck!
  • Sorry to say you're out of luck. It's the homeowner's responsibility to be sure you're surge protected. :(

  • I don't think so. If you had real surge protectors (and not just outlet strip), they usually come wth s warranty/guaranty. But real surge protectors are pricey. Most folks make the mistake of just buying outlet stops with an on/off switch.

  • Thats the thing. The stuff was on a surge protector. The strips had little buttons that pop when there is too much power coming through. Super irritating!  and Now everytime it storms, I am going to be paranoid!

  • I mostly lurk, but I wanted to answer...I formerly worked for a utility company in my area and the are not responsible for anything from the service line into your home, unfortunatly.

HOWEVER...some companies offer a surge protector that goes on your actual meter and would then potect from the meter into your home. If it fails then you can some coverage for items upto a certain $ amount. Our company only charged $5 a month or so for the service.

    HTH!
