Runners, please come in...

I have been jogging 3 miles each morning pretty consistently, but that last few mornings I am REALLY struggling.  I feel like I have to pee the whole time even if I go right before I head out and my belly feels very heavy and uncomfortable.  I have been trying to alternate walking and jogging, but I get very crampy when I jog and find I have to stop.  I couldnt' run with DD because I was high risk, so I don't know how normal this is?  Seems early to be so uncomfortable.  Any advice?  Should I can the running and stick to walking for a while?

  • Doesn't sound like your symptoms are too severe.  I had a lot of problems with fatigue when running and really alternated walking/running even in the first trimester.  A lot of what I've read says that even people who are 100% fine running eventually stop due to the pressure on your bladder.

I'm a big proponent of doing what's comfortable while pregnant.  If you're just comfortable with walking, listen to your body and walk.

  • Oh, and I also practice what I preach by "doing what's comfortable."  For the last 2 weeks, I've done what's comfortable--slept in in the mornings!

But I will start in on the run/walks and listening to my body the whole time.  Pregnancy is not a time to prove how tough I am.

I want to ditto this--just do what you are comfortable doing.  I was running 3 miles/day before I got pregnant, but cut down to 1 or 2 miles running/1-2 miles walking in 1st tri because straight running made me so tired.  I'm back up to doing 2 miles running consistently now, but I plan on cutting back when it gets to be uncomfortable (and I do cut back on days I'm overtired).  Just do what you feel comfortable doing for your own body's needs.

This has been one of the main things I'm struggling with during this pregnancy (FTM)--convincing myself that it's OK to not exercise as hard as I was before I got pregnant!  I just keep telling myself that any amount of exercise I get is beneficial, and I shouldn't get discouraged if I can't do as much as I once did!  Good luck!
