Stinking hurricane! We might get evacuated.

I got a notification alert from our local police tonight that says we are in a "likely mandatory evacuation area" - boo!   I have 3 cats and a giant dog, my DH, a special GD diet, and my insulin and testing supplies.  The last thing I want to do is evacuate.  The only reason they want to evacuate us is because the only road into our neighborhood is likely to flood.  The neighborhood itself is on high ground and is not in the flood zone.  If the road does flood, I guess they can't get emergency services to us.  I really don't want to go and can easily go through my backyard and get to a neighborhood that is not an evacuation area and would have emergency services.  My parents are in the same neighborhood and have a generator.  I know they want us to be safe, but ugh!  Can't I just stay home, please?

  • Yuck!  Maybe if they come to evacuate you, you can just ask for the reason.  You should be prepared to evacuate either way, so if you need to leave on short notice, you can.

  • In FL, they can't force you to evacuate. They can knock on the door tell you that you have to, and you can say no. They'll look at you pretty funny...but they can't make you. I think since it's just your road flooding and you have the backyard route, then you could stay. I would just explain "I'm ___ months pregnant, on a special diet, have no where to take my pets, etc." and they will warn you but may let you stay.

It all depends though. If it is truly life or death, I think that is the only way they will drag you out of your house.
  • ALSO Virginia Beach! We are riding out the storm, too. Boarded up our sliding glass doors that face the bay and hoping for the best.

  • I live just outside NYC and my entire city is at or below sea level. They issued a voluntary evacuation yesterday and a mandatory for ground floor apartments today. DH and I already had plans to leave as we told our families about our LO this weekend so thankfully we are not there. Just so worried about massive flooding! Good luck to everyone in the path!

  • Where we live, even if you are under mandatory evacuation you can still stay.  However, don't expect any first responders to come help you if you do.  They will not risk their lives to save yours if you stay when you've been ordered to leave.

  • Well, while everyone is being asked to evacuate that area my DH is being ordered to enter it. He is on a rescue wing in the military and leaving me today =(. I hate not knowing when he is coming back.
