How did you tell your SO?

The morning I got my BFP, DH had already left for work so I had to wait all day to tell him in person. It took me three hours to get home. Total agony. When I finally got home I went upstairs and drew a heart around my belly button with the words Hi Daddy! underneath. Then I went downstairs, told DH I had a present for him and lifted up my shirt. I thought he might pass out he was so excited. Then he made me take another test so he could see two lines appear himself.

Re: How did you tell your SO?

  • We were doing fertility treatments so I had a beta scheduled for two weeks after the trigger shot. In the past I always "cheated" by taking a HPT before the official beta test, but this time I decided to wait for the official test. I went for the blood draw in the morning and my RE called in the afternoon with the results. I let the call go to voicemail and when we both got home from work we listened to it together. We had to listen to it three times to convince myself I was hearing the nurse correctly!

  • We went to Target together to buy a digital test because I felt pregnant and had a super, super faint line on an Internet cheapie.

He wanted to be a part of the testing process. It would have hurt his feelings if I tested without him.

  • Copied from my blog (that's not yet public!)

I knew I was pregnant before Jeff knew. Because we practice Fertility Awareness Method, I always know where I?m at in my cycle ? not yet fertile, fertile, post-fertileness. So, now that we were officially ?trying? to get pregnant, I knew when I could take a test and be reasonably sure of getting an accurate answer (either yay or nay).

So, on Friday, August 19th, I tested. In the morning. At home. Before work. Jeff was in the next room, reading his Bible. He didn?t know. I was pretty darn sure, the answer was going to be ?No?, but either way, I wanted to know. Needless to say, it wasn?t a no. It was a very clear, very quick yes. I looked at myself in the bathroom mirror and gasped! Big eyes. I even said ?Holy buckets!?

I didn?t tell Jeff. Why? Cause I had a plan! My plan then unfolded!
Background: For some odd reason, when we were dating, I kept a log of all our dates. In October 2009, I knew we were coming up on our 100th date. So I invited Jeff on a date! I sent him an invitation and everything.

For that date, I decorated a small room with 100 balloons (yes, I had help blowing them up!). Each one represented one of our dates. On 10 of them, I wrote my top 10 favorite ones. The goal was that we?d laugh about them, then head to dinner. Instead, Jeff got there and proposed! It was a great proposal, but that?s not what this is about.

Telling Jeff: So, to tell Jeff about the pregnancy, I had 3 things:
    1) A surprise in the shower
    2) A countdown
    3) A gift

I wanted to fill the bathtub with pink and blue balloons. Then when he would go in to take a shower, he?d see them and hopefully know! I also had a couple of other things planned.

So, when I got off work that day (I took the afternoon off to put my plan into action), I blew up balloons. The problem is that I had bought the balloons months ago and I think they went ?bad? (can balloons go bad?). Over 1/2 of them wouldn?t inflate and most of the pink ones wouldn?t blow up round ? they were like hot dogs instead of hamburgers. Irg! So I called a grocery store and ordered a helium balloon bouquet. (Funny story: as I went into the store, I ran into a neighbor friend. ACK! Almost caught! I wouldn?t have been ready to explain the reason for the balloons!)

They all went into the shower, safely hidden behind the curtain. I also used my shower crayons and wrote: ?You?re gonna be a dad! 4.29.12?.

That day: We woke up super early that Saturday morning. As is our Saturday morning tradition, Jeff made pancakes and we ate breakfast. Then he went into the bathroom to shave and shower. I got out my gift(s) for him and waited not-so-patiently on the bed. I tried to hear what was going on in the bathroom, but couldn?t hear very well. He shaved. Then I heard the shower curtain open so that he could start the water. Then I heard the door open and he made his way into the bedroom, where he saw this:

    and this:

    Him: ?Jayme??
    Me: ?Jeff?? (totally smiling)
    Him: ?Are you serious??
Me: ?Yup. I even have proof.? (I showed him the test that I had hidden the day before.)
Him: ?Wow. Well, Natural Family Planning works!? (I laughed. I guess you never know if the system works or if you have fertility issues until you try.)
Me: ?Yes, I guess it does!?

Then I gave him one of his gifts.

I had made a paper chain that you use to countdown to things (you commonly see kids do them around Christmas time). On the outside of the chain was a week # of pregnancy. On the inside of the chain was a short description of what would be happening that week in the pregnancy. I did that when we were engaged to count down the number of weeks (which also happened to be 40 weeks!)

After that, he went back and showered. When he came back out, he went to the closet to get dressed (which is good; people appreciate that!). Hanging in the closet next to his clothes was a hanger with a baby-size plaid shirt and a pair of overalls. He chuckled at that one. It?s still there as a reminder of what?s in store for us!

    And that?s our story!

For those familiar with FAM and would want more details:

    • I was 12 dpo when I tested. Cycle Day 33.
    • My period wasn?t due for another 3 days or so.
    • I had a couple of low temps ? 7 dpo and 10 dpo. Because of the low temp on 10dpo, I was certain I was out. But I clearly wasn?t!
    • I had no symptoms that early. Not even stuff I could read into if I wanted to.
  • He was there when I took the test. The plan was to watch it together, but the line came up before the control line did, and before the test finished filling in. I was expecting it to take at least 30sec to a minute or more. I even double checked it to make sure I didn't have the lines confused and I didn't.  So I saw first before I brought it out and then we sat and waited for the control line to appear just in case it was a faulty test...(obviously it wasn't).

  • I didn't want to take a test. I was sure that I was going to start any day, but DH said I was acting different and brought a test home. We both stood in the bathroom together while I took it.

  • this time I had DS "tell" him by wearing a BIG BROTHER shirt...I had the video camera on him....gave him DS when he came home from work....he says "why are you video taping me? am I missing something?" (as he is looking at DS and at the shirt) I said, read the shirt...he does the double take look (at the shirt and me) and is like "what, uh...are you...?" I teary eyed smiled and said yes and he said woo-hoo! It was awesome! (I also had a bag w/the digital pregnancy test and told him to look in the bag to see)

  • We just got back from vacation that afternoon, and I wasn't planning on testing. Once Ella was down for her nap, I took a blue-dye test. A line popped up, but I didn't have the directions on how to read it (thanks DD!)....I wasn't sure if it was supossed to be a - or a +. I walked downstairs and told him that I just took a test but wasn't sure if it was positive, so to CVS I went. I came back, took another test (the line popped up within seconds), and told him. Not all that exciting, but I was impatient. If I had waited to test, I would've let Ella tell him.

  • I had suspected a was pregnant since August 19 but I was away visiting my sister and didn't want to test there (I hadn't taken any tests with me and couldn't sneak away to buy one).  I didn't test until around 11:30 pm on the 24th (as soon as I got home).  My DH was a work until about 12:30am so I just left the test on the kitchen table.  When he got home we said our hellos (lots of hugs and kisses) and then I told him that I needed him to take a look at something on the kitchen table.  He went into the kitchen, it seemed like he was really quiet for a very long time (probably only a minute or two though) and then said "Are we pregnant?" and started crying (happy tears).  We had been trying for 14 cycles so he was pretty excited and danced and jumped around the kitchen saying "my boys work!" for quite awhile. Smile
  • I was not very creative. He was right outside the bathroom while I was taking the tests. The IC and FRER had super faint lines, so I used a digi. It was a weekday, so we set the timer and went about our morning. When the timer went off, I ran upstairs to check. When it said pregnant I ran downstairs to the kitchen to show him. He was super excited! We hugged and kissed and then I called my mom.

I tested at 9 DPO. We were both preparing ourselves for a negative since it was early and was our first cycle TTC.

  • I couldn't sleep that night, my mind was racing. At around 5am I said screw it and took a test. A faint line came up. I went back in the bedroom where DH was sleeping and said, "hey, you're gonna be a daddy." He was groggy and was like, "really?"  He saw the test after he finally woke up and saw the line. The next morning I took another test with DH there and the other line was definitely there!

  • I was going away in the morning with DD to visit my mom for 4 days so I thought I would take a test that night just in case... DH was watching tv and I had big plans to surprise him when I did get pregnant (shirt on DD or note from her). I quickly stuck the test in a little box and took it downstairs to give to him saying I got him something today.

  • I took the test Monday morning and waited until DH got home from work. I bought a little onsie that said "my daddy rocks! " and put it and the positive test in a box...a lingerie box..hehehe. After dinner I told him I had a present...I think he thought it might be lingerie...but he was very surprised when he opened it...he was in complete shock for a couple seconds and kept saying is this for real? when he looked up and saw that I was crying he knew it was for real!

Fertility treatments for me too. This is what I planned on doing, but I couldn't wait. I listened and then made quick shirts for our two pups that said Big Brother #1 and Big Brother #2 on them. Everyday they race to the door when DH gets home, so I knew he'd get the message immediately. Then we listened to the message together, because we were convinced we heard it wrong.

  • I took the test, left it in our bathroom to incubate, and went downstairs to get a snack, acting all calm and cool. Went back upstairs "to do laundry," saw a positive and started shaking I was so excited/shocked/nervous. I took it back downstairs and set it in front of him. He just stared for a minute. Then he asked, and he will forever be teased about this, "How did this happen?" I was thinking "Oh $#i!, this is not the reaction I was hoping for." He said, "We haven't had sex in 3 weeks" and I told him that just meant I was more than 3 weeks pregnant. He strongly suggested I take another test to be sure. So I go back to doing laundry, totally deflated by his reaction since we'd been trying for 8 months, though he admitted to having slight reservations about the idea. About 5 minutes later, he comes upstairs, hugs me and was ecstatic. I think he was just in shock for the first 5 minutes.

Now, he's even more excited than I am.
