It hit Long Island in 1985 and I remember schools being closed and we had no power for over a week. That was the last Hurricane that I remember our area being effected.
Anyone else "experience" Gloria?

I remember Gloria, it was the first Friday of my freshman year of high school so I was super excited for my first football game as a high schooler. Then they cancelled school and the game and it only rained for like an hour-- such a let down. (probably similar to what could happen with Irene where I live)

Yes I remember it. It blew half the siding off my mother's house. We lost power, but not for a huge amount of time maybe a day ? No major damage aside from coastal flooding where I am from (typical of most large storms).
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

Hah - I was in High School too! I thought I'd be dating myself if I admitted that. I remember it clearly we actually had a fun family day with no damage and only a day of power outage.

I don't but I do remember Hurricane Bob which hit New England in '91.
"Normal day, let me be aware of the treasured day you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart...let me hold you while I may."
wow that brought back a huge flood of memories. I grew up on the east coast and remember it very well. my mom was preg with my brother at the time. I was sitting on the couch with her and my brother was kicking away in there and I sat cuddled up with her feeling those kicks as we listened to the wind howl. We did end up with a downed tree or two that day.
Hey I just met you, and you're my baby. This is your family, we're kind of crazy...
Yup! My neighbors across the street were riding in a canoe in their front lawn! It was a day off from school for us too. (I grew up in centra NJ.) I hope this one doesn't hit that hard up here! We already have a state of emergency in MA.
Unexplained Infertility
After two Clomid cycles, three injectable IUI cycles, two IVFs, two miscarriages, and one lap surgery, IVF #2 has brought us our little boy!
TTC #2 After months of being postponed or cancelled, FET #1.3 (Natural FET) brought us twin girls!
I remember it, I was in 8th grade. My mom was the Chief of Staff for Delaware's Lieutant Governor at the time so we spent the storm in an office tower downtown while they coordinated the state's response to the storm.
Gloria! Gloria! I think I have your number. Oh Oh, calling Gloria!

This lurker remembers! I was in fifth grade and I remember going out when the rains calmed down but it was still windy with my raincoat and an umbrella and letting the wind blow me around.
Sept. 2010: IVF #1= BFP; May 2012: FET #1= blighted ovum, D&C; FET #2= ??
funny thing is my mom's name is Irene... and her sister's name is Gloria.... and those are the two biggest storms to cause issues in this area.... my husband said if there is ever a storm with my grandmother's name he's getting the HELL out of here! LOL... I would, too, since her name is Irmgard, and that's pretty damn rare, lol.
I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.
I remember Gloria. I think I was in Highschool. I also remember Floyd...lots of flooding. Not looking forward to Irene...but we're as ready as we can be.
I lived in Valley Stream on Long Island for Hurricane Gloria, which was a category 3 when it hit LI head on. There was a sh!t ton of damage on my street. EVERY tree came down. We didn't have school for a week. My dad's parents lived in LOng Beach, and the bay and the ocean met in the middle. The barrier islands were completely under water - they had sand in their living room when they got home (obs mandatory evac'ed).
I remember playing in the downed trees when the eye of the storm went over and all of our parents yelling at us to get out of the trees, because the power lines were down and in them.
We didn't have school for a week. I was about 8-9. It was awesome.

Far, far worse than any of that was the big Ice Storm in 1998. That was nasty.
I was in a horrible car accident in the aftermath of that storm.

Ugh, I've been singing that song ever since I read this post. Go away Laura Branigan!
I remember! I was in the second grade at the time. Some of the big trees near our house fell down, but I don't remember too much about it.
I also remember Bob from about 20 years ago. My family was on vacation and we had to come home early, which sucked.

Yep! I grew up in Connecticut and I remember very clearly how strange it was when the "eye" of the storm passed over...
I'm really hoping Irene will not be as severe as predicted.
I am thankful every day for my miracle after infertility.
And thrilled to be pregnant again after FET!
