scented laundry and carcinogens

I just read an article on cbs news about scented laundry detergent and fabric softeners releasing carcinogens.

We have been using free and clear detergents for about a decade because I'm sensitive to the scents but until DS was born I did use dryer sheets.

I want to use something this winter so I'm not a walking ball of static.  What do you use?  And does it sound like you are drying sneakers in the dryer (lots of BAM BAM BAM)?

  • I was using wool dryer balls until they fell apart, but honestly, I don't know how much they helped.  I also tried vinegar, but I started using Ecos a few months ago, and it seems to have built in softeners, so I don't use anything anymore.  I haven't used it during the winter, so I'll see how it goes.  Another tip is to not overdry.  Try setting your dryer for less time, and get things out right away.

  • I didn't have much luck with dryer balls, but only did try the one kind they sold at Bed Bath & Beyond.

We've been using a vinegar rinse in the wash (instead of fabric softener) and have not needed dryer sheets but that may change in the winter.

NOTHING is worse than being shocked by the dryer when taking clothes out.  Even when we did use dryer sheets, I would still ask my husband to take the clothes out because I couldn't stand being shocked.

  • I tried the hard plastic like dryer balls and they were so loud in the dryer that DH didn't want to use them.  Maybe wool would be better.

  • I use tinfoil just roll it into a small ball and you can use it for weeks. never have problems with static
  • I sell wool dryer balls. They cut down on drying time and they help with static. Let me know if you are interested and I can make you a custom listing on my etsy shop.
  • They are also very quiet because they are soft and light weight.
  • Separating types of fabric, towels with towels, etc. Apparently when cloths dry at different speeds it causes static.
