Anyone have or will do cloth?

DH and I seriously talking about this but I am hesitant about the washing and prepping part all the time... I will prob use these at home for sure but hesitant about when LO is older....

Whats your thoughts/advice/experience?

Re: Anyone have or will do cloth?

  • I use them and love them. Honestly, I think everyone has their own preferences on what type/brand to use. It does require more washing, but I really think it's worth it. I prefer one size snap pocket diapers, use a white kitchen garbage pail with a pail liner, and am a big fan of the diaper sprayer. I didn't have a diaper sprayer until a few months ago and wish I had one earlier. My DD is 22 months and I still CD without a problem. :)

Let me know if I can answer any specific questions.

  • We CD and LOVE it.  We used paper diapers for about 7 weeks with DS and we'll never go back.  DS is 25 months and nearly 30 lbs and we are CDing with no issues whatsoever.  We use a combo of pocket diapers and all-in-2 (AI2) diapers.  More and more I'm like the AI2s....BumGenius Elementals and Tots Bots.

  • we're planning on using a diaper service that we have in my area. no washing or anything - just put them on the porch once a week and magically the dirty ones are one and clean ones appear! It works out to about the same price as disposables, so we're looking forward to the minimal work.

  • We cloth diaper and love it.  It's really so much easier than it seems.  Also, I think cloth diapering when they are older is even easier than when they are younger just because their poop is more solid...it just plops right off.  For those that don't, we use the diaper sprayer.

We use the Bum Genius 4.0 pocket diapers and Fuzzibunz one size pocket diapers.  All with snaps.  That would be my biggest advice...get snaps not velcro!  The velcro wears SO SO fast and they are just a pita.  We use the velcro for a little under a year and they were so worn that the diapers would just fall off...I emailed BG and they replaced all of them (with snaps since I asked).  And snaps have been SO much better!

Definitely! I've got a stash going already for this one! I'm extremely excited to try it!

  • One of our friends had their baby this week and they are planning on using CDs at home and disposables when not at home.  My plan is to see how that works out and how doable it is.

I saw a really interesting special on TV where they talked about the environmental impact of CDs vs. disposables.  Turns out that disposables are the more ecofriendly option if you live somewhere where there are water shortages.  Just food for thought!

  • My sister has completely and unintentionally turned me off to cloth diapering.  I'm not sure how everyone else does this because I'm not really in the know on on it, but she was in town for a week and used my washing machine and dryer to wash my nephew's diapers and I almost died.  She had to do the rinse cycle once, then wash cycle twice, then it took two times in the dryer to dry.  And when they came out of the dryer they still smelled like poo.  It took a week to get that smell out of my washer and dryer.  I have no idea what detergent she uses, but it definitely did not work.  I don't know why she doesn't use a diaper service, I can't imagine spending an entire day washing diapers.  I also think it would have been more sanitary to boil a pot of water in the backyard and dunk them in there.

Sorry for being so negative, but that experience really horrified me.  I would imagine other people clean theirs better than my sister.

Clearly your sister has a wash routine that is NOT working.  First, you don't need two full wash cycles.  Second, I doubt she's using the correct detergent for her diapers and water needs.  Third, putting diapers in the dryer will set in the smell and will shorten the life.  She should be hanging them up to dry either inside on a drying rack or outside in the sun.  They will not smell if washed properly and hung outside to dry.

We've been doing this for 2 years and when we have smell issues I adjust my detergent and hang outside to dry.  It doesn't take all day to wash either :)

Please don't let your sister's CD experience ruin it for you (if you were even considering it!)
