which spelling (clicky)

We picked the name Norah for a girl after we saw it on TV, spelled N-O-R-A-H.  After I posted on here one time that we had picked that name I had a few responses saying "We picked the name Nora too for a girl."  Nobody else spelled it with an H.  I thought the name was not very popular (I work on a maternity unit and I looked through about 3 years worth of our name records and only found 4 Norah's.) and now I feel like it might be more common than we thought

All that being said, I don't want the name to become more common and then have my daughter be the only one with the H on the end, but I love it spelled that way!

I voted for the H on the end. Smile But in response to your bolded statement - you may already know this, but just in case... the Social Security administration has a website that tells you the popularity of any name for every year up to last year. So if you really want to know how common a name is, you can search for it there.

  • I prefer the H. I think it looks more complete.  Like Sarah vs. Sara.

  • Thank you! That makes it seem like not as popular of a name after looking at that website!

Yes, this is exactly what I was going to say. My name is SaraH and I always thought Sara looked sort of incomplete.

  • Thanks for picking on my name everyone.  J/K.  My name is Sara without an H.  And I was going to say, don't worry about your child being the only one with their name spelt that way.  Growing up everyone would just place an H on the end of my name because that was the most common way to spell it.  However, I felt special that my name was spelt differently than the many other Sarah's that I came accross.  Not to insult any Sarah's out there, but I thought the H was always unneccessary and made the name uglier.  That said, I agreed that the H on Nora made it look more complete.  Really, however you write the name that is how your daughter will end up liking it.

  • I'm Sara without the H, too.  My husband is Jon without the H.  We're not into extra letters. lol.  However, I did vote for Norah.  Reminds me of Norah Jones.  Maybe your little girl will grow up to be a famous singer someday.  What middle names are you thinking about?

  • The middle name will be Juliann.
  • i like both spellings but what you may want to think about is how you want it pronounced. do you want Nora with a softer a sound at the end or do you want Norah with the H sound.. i kept sayn Noraaaa or Nor-ahh i dunno im wierd but thats what i was thinking lol

  • My best friend from grade school is named Norah, and I love the H at the end!  Arey91, I don't think there will be any issues with pronunciation--my friend pronounces hers like it's spelled without the H (basically treats the H as a silent letter).
