Trying to Get Pregnant

Negative pregnancy test in 1 minute?

I went to the doctor (dermatologist, not TTC related) today for pre-procedure workup and they did a urine pregnancy test.

She took my urine sample and literally one minute later came and said "It was negative".

Also, it was about 9:45am, not FMU and only about 2 hours after I last peed.

I do not think I am pregnant based on where I think I am in my cycle (but we are not charting, just started TTC and my cycles are irregular, so who knows).  I am not surprised at the result, just surprised that it would come back so quickly.

Does this sound right to anyone?

I think I'll do my own HPT the morning of the procedure, just to be sure it is negative.  We would make different anesthesia choices if I were pregnant, so I want to be 100% sure.

I just wondered if anyone knew how it could be back so fast, my at home ones take much longer, at least 3 minutes.

Re: Negative pregnancy test in 1 minute?

  • I don't think they really wait to see, unless you told them you were trying and have reason to believe you might be pregnant.

I do urine pregnancy tests on every female that comes into my facility and I don't wait the 2-5 minutes.... if they told me they thought they were pregnant I would... but generally I don't.

Any positive I've ever seen has come up in 30 seconds or less.

But if I were you I would test the morning of the procedure just to be sure.

  • Sounds like they just jumped the gun a little.  All of my HPT's say it can take up to 5 mins to confirm a negative.  I would think that even a dermatologist should have some sense about how these things work, but then again, many gyno's say its a bad idea to chart, so who freaking knows!  I would test again in the morning if your are concerned.  GL
  • Every test I took that was positive showed as soon as you could see the pee move into that little window. I don't know why they tell you to wait so long.

Hmmmm, good to know.  Since I have never seen that pretty little line appear, I would have no idea.  Thanks for the tip though!

Same here.  I've ever only gotten one positive (when I found out I was pregnant with DS), but it literally showed up as soon as urine hit the strip.  I'm sure there must be a reason for the wait though, right???

I got a BFP with my current (in limbo) pregnancy at 10 DPO, with a FRER. However, I definitely didn't see anything until at least 2.5 minutes had gone by. In fact, I thought "it's negative"  but waited it out.  Eventually my tests become almost immediately positive, but the first one might not be.

Also, my family doc said her preg test for me was negative. Then a few minutes later, the receptionist told me that it was actually positive but a weak positive. I agree that sometimes they jump the gun and make a decision to quickly. I think they should wait the full testing time.

  • I had one done in room and it was less than a minute when a negative was confirmed. She even said "I have never seen a negative show up more quickly or strongly." Devil Thanks.

Ha!  Yep, that's kind of how it felt today.  Gee, thanks.

  • My doc (not OB) took a blood test at 3DPO... which I had to pay for mind you... they don't listen sometimes to people who know their own bodies.  There is no way to know whether I was or wasn't KU at 3DPO, yet they tested anyways!

Whenever I go to the OB they never tell me the result one way or the other.  My urine just disappears into the stainless steel cabinet that is connected to the lab, but then again, I've never gone post-O/pre-AF.  FWIW, 1 minute does seem pretty quick - like any urine based test I would think there is a potential for it to change during the designated wait time but 99% of the time it doesn't (for me at least).

  • I've taken a hand full of pregnancy tests in my time, and always had some response in about 30 seconds, whether negative or positive.

  • I would hope, if there is anesthesia involved, they would test you again on the morning of the procedure.

And when I got my bfp with DD, I was throwing the test away, and happened to notice the positive.  It took a few minutes for it to show up, with fmu, 2 weeks late.

Same for me. Mine did not show up right away until I was further along.
