I have heard that if you bf, wait to start solids until 6 months. What do you do/What is your plan with that? Also, when do you fit in the solids? How do you know what to start with? My baby just turned 4 months. Thanks!
I waited until 6 months to introduce solids to my DD. I started with rice cereal (big fail) then moved to oatmeal (win)! After a week I introduced either peas or sweet potatoes, I don't remember which came first. I just mixed the puree into the oatmeal in the beginning to help with the new flavor.
Start offering solids during a meal time. I started with lunch. After about 3 weeks of only offering one solid meal I transitioned to two meals a day (breakfast and lunch). She didn't get much but it's more for practice at this age anyway.
I used wholesomebabyfood.com to get an idea of what to start with and where to go. I also made all my baby food (super easy) and froze them in ice cube trays. Once frozen I transferred them to a ziplock container (many use bags) and labeled.
I'm waiting 6 months and doing Baby Led Weaning/Baby Led Solids, so I plan to start right with finger foods. Right now, I'm leaning towards sweet potatoes or avocado, but you can start with anything you want. You can do cereals or purees or just give your LO a bit of what you're eating. They don't really eat much at 6 months anyway.
I'm planning on starting at 6 months. I have a few books that give ideas on what foods to start with, so I'll follow that. I really like how it's laid out in Baby 411. You just need to be careful not to introduce too much at once, in case they have a reaction--you'll obviously want to know which food it was. Also remember that for awhile the majority of the child's nutrition is coming from BM. I read it's important to give BM first, then solids. So I'm no expert, but maybe this helped a little

We started right after 4 months at the advice of the pedi. DD went from 95%ile at 2 mo to 70%ile at 4 mo, and she was waking more frequently to eat. She got very active at that point, so she needed the additional calories. She hated rice cereal, so we basically just gave oatmeal (mixed with BM) for the first month, and we went slowly adding in other foods.
I started with dinner-time cereal, then added breakfast, then worked in lunch. The pedi suggested starting with one TBSP at a time and working to four TBSP per meal. She let us know when she was full.
It did not change our BFing relationship. She still BFed 8ish times/day until 7 months, and we still BF 6 times/day.
