If you pump first thing in the AM and give LO a bottle...

Do you give LO more than they would usually get in a bottle the rest of the day?  DS STTN for the first time last night and I was really engorged when I woke up this morning.  I decided that I would take this opportunity to pump to see if I could get some extra BM to add to my stash.  DS has been getting 3 1/2 oz. per bottle at daycare but our DCP told me yesterday that he seemed to want a little more so he may be going through a growth spurt.  I gave him 4 oz. in a bottle this morning and was able to pump 7 oz.  I also sent 4 oz. in his bottles for the day.

All this to ask - do you give LO more in that first bottle of the day because he/she hasn't eaten in so long?

  • Charlotte doens't STTN, but she only gets up once, so she hasn't eaten in 3+ hours when she gets up in the morning.  I actually start with less because she likes to "talk" to me and not eat.  I just send a little more to daycare and let them feed her.

  • Nope.  She's STTN for well over a month- I give her a 5 oz bottle for breakfast while I pump, then I pack 3- five ounce bottles for daycare.  So she gets the same size meal throughout the day.

  • I typically give an oz more at that feeding because he is starving when he wakes up.  But I only pump instead of nursing on the weekends.  It is a great way to get extra milk since I usually can pump about 8-10 oz.  During the week, I nurse ds and then pump after.
