Kids Clothing Budget Poll

How much do y'all spend annually per child on clothes?

Gah, I guess I never really thought about it much before 2 kids. But now that we are almost all done with the baby clothes gifts for our youngest, I'm completely realizing how expensive it is to shop clothes for 2 kids. Of course each season, they outgrown their sizes. Sigh....

And now that I have a girl, I'm even more in trouble with clothing expenses!

  • I'm too embarrassed to answer this. I have a problem. Plus I think boy clothes are really hard!!

    Too much

  • I used to spend a crazy amount but now that we have cut back and downsized I limit myself, I have no choice. Wait till both kids are in multiple activities, it gets even more expensive. Between school uniforms, regular clothes, ballet, gymnastics, tennis and soccer it adds up.
  • I don't keep track but if I did, I would probably have a heart attack.  I have enough clothes, shoes, accessories to open a children's boutique! The only good thing is I am able to re-use most of Ava's clothes, but then I feel guilty that the second child has no clothes of her own.  I actually went to a consignment sale for the first time ever today and think I should do more of that, but it is really hard to find the time to go to those when you work full time - the good stuff seems to go quickly!
  • Waaaay too much.  :)  I try to buy on sale, but that doesn't always happen.
  • I actually have no idea, but I will say I've gotten SOOOO lucky that Riley was a huge child and has been able to wear all of Finn's clothes, so right now I typically only have to buy stuff for Finn and then I usually get Riley a few new things, but all on sale and I've bought Kellen a few new and/or consigned items.  So I feel like I'm keeping costs down.  PLUS, Finn started wearing a uniform this year and next year Riley will too, so that's gonna be cheap!  To answer your question, I have no idea.  :)

  • oh, and, you should check out the FB selling pages!  I've been able to buy stuff new with tags for a fraction of the price!

  • I really have no idea.  I always just pick up things here and there vs doing a big shopping trip at the beginning of each season.  So I know it adds up and I'm sure it's way more than I should be spending... my downfall is totally girls' clothes though.  On more than one occasion I've gone shopping for baby boy clothes and come home with bags of clothes for Caroline.

i do try to hit sales though, and generally buy from places like ON, Target, Gap, etc.  But I do splurge at  J&J and Gymboree some too....I shoudl really start doing the consignment thing.

  • We have so many hand me downs for Aerin and some for Alec that I have not had to spend too much. I also shop consignment and sales at stores.  I probably spend at most $350/year combined for both kids.  However, I've cut back because we have had to.  If DH gets a perm job that pays well I will probably indulge more:)  I definitely want a custom-made gator dress for Aerin--this will be my first purchase!!

  • Way too much. Way.Too.Much. And now with a girl? Worse.

I do shop sales a lot, because I like stores that are ridiculous for kids, like Janie and Jack, Norstrom, MiniBoden. I tend to buy for the next season when they go on sale, but I can't do that for Lila because she is a chunk.

  • I have no idea an actual price, but I do try to be very careful with what I buy.  I also don't by from the big kids stores unless I'm buying for pictures so the bulk of the boys clothes come from Kohls, Penney's, Target & consignment with a piece here and there from Gymboree, GAP, etc.

  • I have two girls born each born in opposite seasons. Repeat I have TWO girls. I spend way too much on their clothes especially clothes for church. Plus, I have been on a smock dress kick and addicted to a few fb sites that sells them. Hopefully, in a few years I can recoup a little of the money back when I sell them.

  • I would guess $600/yr for Easton. For Ellie Brooke, I would say multiply Easton by atleast 5. Girls clothes are a whole other beast. I am addicted to Matilda Jane. I don't even try to keep it cheap for her. I buy what I love. I keep telling myself there will be a limited number of years that I can make her wear what I want her to wear. If those years cost me a fortune, so be it.

  • dang, my husband should buy me some jewelry as thank you for how little i spend ;-)

i probably buy a shirt and pair of pants per month and usually on sale - so maybe i average $10/$20 per month? i have been very lucky with two generous friends with little boys that are older and well, he is a boy.  i am sure as he gets older the hand me downs will lessen (he is so hard on his clothes as it is), and i have to admit i kind of look forward to going full on shopping for him.

  • Probably too much already, and if this next one's a girl, I'm really in trouble! I've been lucky in that DS (and soon to be LO#2) are the only grandkids on both sides so we tend to get a lot of clothes from both grandmas. But both DH and I reserve veto power on said clothes, so if either one if us can't stand an outfit we give it away instead.

Plus early this spring I was an idiot and bought DS mostly shorts with buttons and zippers. Then he PT'd and I realized how much easier elastic waist bands would be (and bought all new shorts). I've bought him several nice shirts just for photos or a work event for DH or me. And now that he's about to start preschool I realized that his wardrobe is mostly t-shirts that are random souvenirs from trips, so I bought him a few polos the other day. Ugh.

  • I try to shop sales. Even though boy clothes are not as exciting as girl clothes, I still manage to buy a lot of them. Last summer fall Colin needed all new 2T. I got fabulous deals at the GAP and literally purchased his entire fall wardrobe for about $150 or so in one shot then I was done. This summer he needed 3T so I hit a great sale at Chrildren's place and he was done for about $130 or so. I also spent about $50 on shoes for the year. He is currently a completely spoiled only child so we will see what happens when I no longer have just the one.

  • We are so lucky to get hand me downs and have grandma's that love to shop. Even with that I would hate to know what I spend on Jack's clothes. It's so easy to just grab things for him. Not to mention I really love Gap for him. His jeans are as much as mine but, somehow I justify it for him and don't bat an eye. :)
  • I could never add it up, I'd have a heart attack on the spot!  Poor Ethan gets about 80-90% hand-me-downs from Jack, but I kinda wish I had someone to hand all of Lauren's stuff to as well...then I'd feel better about it!  Her wardrobe is ridiculous for next summer, I saw so much cute stuff this year that either didn't even come in infant sizes (Ie. Matilda Jane or other smocked, boutique stuff) or just thought it would look better on a bigger baby that can sit up.  Definitely since Lauren was born, my boys have gotten a bit of the shaft....Jack only wants to wear a soft t-shirt and elastic waist shorts and Crocs, so while we've been bumming around all summer I've let him do just that.  But now I'm buying him some nicer stuff for fall, so I'm having to remember the boys side when I go in stores :)

I've been using the FB sites and Zulily for Lauren (all the smocked ones are killing me!!) and kinda getting away from Gymboree lately, although she did have some cute stuff from there this summer.  Gap is hit or miss for me, I got a lot of great stuff last year for her to wear this winter, but I haven't seen anything currently that I really like.  Target sometimes has cute stuff, but also haven't seen anything lately for the boys especially.
