Pregnant after IF

how much pain/pressure do you have?

I had a very uncomfortable and sleepless night and the OB sent me to the hospital this morning as a precaution.  The good news: my cervix is still closed and I wasn't contracting.  I'm going to see the OB again and an MFM @ Northwestern on Monday, I really appreciate all your replies yesterday.

I'm wondering how much pain and pressure you have?  I have a pretty high pain tolerance and I think I'm able to distinguish now between the very active babies, the heavy pressure on my half baked cervix, the shooting pains, ute stretching, etc.  I'm trying to gauge what level of pain is normal and what isn't, since I can't really be going to the hospital every day for the next four months.  Any ideas or advice?

Re: how much pain/pressure do you have?

  • I've only got 1, so I don't think we're really comparable so I don't have any advice for you, but wanted to tell you that all my fingers and toes are crossed tight for you and your little ones.  I'm so glad your cervix is nice and closed and I really hope it stays that way!

You are doing everything you can, hang in there and stay put little ones!!!!!

  • If you feel the need to bear down, push, poop.... go straight to L&D.

It is a different kind of pain when your cervix is being wonky. Not too painful.  Not like the stretching sharp stuff.

  • well first of all, i'm glad the babies are still doing well and nothing has changed since yesterday! and i'm sooo happy you are going to have the peace of mind of a second opinion :)

as far as pain/pressure, i would say b/n weeks 18-20 i had lots of mild period-like cramps, and the nurse at my MFM office told me that is very normal for that point in a twins pregnancy. i also noticed that was the point that i REALLY needed to be on top of the water situation, otherwise they got worse. i have had pain once in a while, but nothing consistent and my guess was it was ligament pain.

i also have had some mild pressure/discomfort in what i'm guessing is my cervix, but that wasn't until around 24 weeks.

to make you feel better, i went into L&D triage twice between weeks 24-28 and it turned out both times to be dehydration (even though i drink like a gallon of water a day). i added a 32-ounce gatorade to my gallon of water per day (plus juice, milk, etc) and i've been fine since. twins just need *a lot* of fluids!

  • I really hate that you're going through any of this. I can't remember feeling anything except RLP at that point... not even movement yet- however, my memory sucks, so I'm not a great person to give you any advice on that subject. Please know that i'm thinking of you and sending tons of T&Ps your way though!!

  • I'm glad things are still holding and even happier you are getting to the MFM!

I've had several episodes starting in the 20ish week period of alot of pain.  I think some was RPL, some was babies on my sciatic nerve and some was just them moving around in a big way.  Twice I've had to leave a restaurant in pain and come home and get in the bath tub.  I've not had contractions that I could time but that's the first thing to check, then I take a warm bath, drink alot of water and get in bed. If it goes away within the hour (which it has) I haven't done anything.

I hope the MFM gives you some better and more evidence based instructions.  I have Aetna insurance and they have a nurse call you throughout your pregnancy - she offered to send a nurse at no cost to me to my house to talk about signs of pre-term labor.  Maybe yours does something similar?
