WWYD? re: baby vs. Irene

The current plan in place is for us to call DH's parents as soon as I go into labor, then drop DD1 off at a friend's while we head to the hospital. Once they get down here, they will take her back to our place and stay with her until we come home. They live in CT and would be driving down via 95, which will be definitely impacted by the hurricane.

Does it make sense to ask them to drive down early AM tomorrow? It doesn't sound like we'll start getting rain until tomorrow afternoon, so they could still make it. But if I don't go into labor, they're basically going to head back home and then we'd have the baby within the next 2 weeks, so they'd have to come right back. We'd also have to bring the dog to the dogsitter while they're here.

It feels like such a gamble. At my last appt on Tues, I was 1cm dialated and soft and the MW could feel the baby's head. My gut is telling me I'll make it through the weekend, but I have been having some cramping in the last day or so. I know they'd be totally willing to come down, but it seems crazy to have them come down, then go back up then come right back down. Thoughts?

  • hmm....how long of a drive is it?  and do you get along well with them?  If its not that bad of a drive, and you wouldn't mind them being around for one of your last weekends with just your daughter, I'd invite them down.  Could your friend take care of your DD1 for the amount of time that your DH would be at the hospital with you and the new baby?

    Tough decision!!

It's about a 7hr drive. :( So not very close. We do get along, but we would have to bring the dog to the dogsitter while they're here, too, since FIL is allergic. That's our back-up plan right now, since I'm thinking we will make it through the weekend - DD would stay with friends while I have the baby, then I'd just have to be alone at the hospital while DH goes home to take care of DD1. Not the end of the world, for sure, but not ideal, either.

  • Sigh. Sorry you are dealing with this :( I am due next Thursday and live in South Florida so I was very concerned about Irene myself.

Are you in an area that is very possibly going to be impacted? My concern was that the drop in pressure would bring on labor and I would be stuck and not able to get to the hospital myself.

If it was me, I would probably just "risk" letting the ILs stay put since they are pretty far and you have a safe babysitter that you trust. Has DH talked to them about this? I know if it were MY parents, I would bring up my concerns and they'd be in the car - 7 hour drive notwithstanding, even if I told them not to. My ILs on the other hand would not so maybe your ILs are more like my parents :)

  • When did you have your 1st? Most often women follow their own pattern (if not induced, etc). If you ran late, I'd assume you'd be fine. Do you have ANY friends locally who could take LO for a few hours at a time or something and DH could run between? Not ideal but neither is asking someone to drive 28 hours in under a week or two potentially.

Yep, that is also a concern. I live in the DC metro region and DH's parents are in northern CT.

DD1 was 6 weeks early. And my water broke with her. So......yeah. lol That's our back-up plan right now, to have our neighbors/friends watch her while I actually HAVE the baby, then DH will have to go home to care for DD. We're on the phone with my in-laws now.
