My own name vent...

So... my name is a tad different. "Lancy" Not too out there... right? Nancy with an L... Lacy plus an N... you get the idea.

All my life, I've had people ask me to repeat it, followed by an "oh! That's different, but cute!" after which, they get it, and say it correctly. Which, after 23 years, I'm used to this. I'm also completely used to people on the phone (after I say, "Good morning! *name of where I work* This is Lancy, how may i help you?) still calling me things like Lacy, Lindsey, etc. (strangely, I never get Nancy) It doesn't bother me, because it's not a big deal when it's not someone who really needs to know my name.

What gripes me is people I've known (even just casually) for a while, who still butcher my name after repeatedly being corrected. Like this lady at work with one of those "nails on a chalkboard" voices, who constantly is calling me over to do her work because "she's busy" (doing what, we have no idea). I'm the floater, and inevitably the "new kid" everywhere I go, and so she feels the need to "pick on" me. (yes, this was out of her own mouth)

She's messed my name up 6 times since 9am. I've quit answering her when she says anything other than my correct name. Then, she gets crabby that I'm ignoring her. I know I'm pregnant, and the hormones are raging, but I think this is a little ridiculous. Lancy is not that hard of a name. So, thank you all for listening and keeping me from losing it in front of everone. :)

Re: My own name vent...

  • I have ALWAYS had my name butchered! My name is Elise. I get called Elsie (like the cow), Alise, Elisa, Alisa...so on...Customers on the phone call me Julie, Julia, i even got a Julisse....Honestly! I know how you feel and it is VERY irritating! The more pregnant I get, the more irritated and less patient I get with people...so You are NOT alone!!

  • That is SO annoying! My name is Bethany, so 95% of the time I get Stephanie, and like you said, I just let people call me Stephanie if I'll never talk to them again. But for someone who knows you, that is just ridiculous!

  • Oooooohhhhhh girl! I totally understand! My name is Jeanne pronounced "Genie"  NOBODY can say it right! Granted the spelling is a little awkward but come on! I swore I would change the spelling to Jeannie when I turned 18, but I never did.  I get Jean, Jenny, Je-Anne.... you name it! If I'm talking to someone on the phone they butcher the spelling.

Becuase of this VERY reason I am determined to have my kids name spelled exactly like it sounds.  I cringe everytime I see an awkwardly spelled name Tongue Tied

  • I totally understand all of this...  My name is Crissy and I always get called "Kristie".  Ugh...  So I follow it up with "no, it's Crissy, no 't'".  People spelling it correctly is impossible so I don't even let it get to me.

  • My first name is easy for people, but I've had a lot of them continuously mispronounce my last name despite corrections.

I'm not an expert, but I'd recommend calmly letting her know how much it bothers you when people mispronounce your name and ask her nicely to try to get it right from now on.  It could cause some conflict, sure, but I imagine so has the ignoring her thing.

  • First, I like your name.  I've not ever heard it, but I like it!

Second, I feel your pain. My name is Jana, pronounced like Hannah, but with a J.  I get everything under the sun...Janet, Dana, Janice, Jenna.  Yeah, annoying... J ana, not that hard.  I remember one time on the phone, I have to say my name when I answer work phone too, I corrected someone when they repeated my name back to me...it ended up being a huge fiasco and eventually said it's not that big of a deal, how may I help you?  It's insane what people "hear" sometimes. Yeah, I wouldn't answer her either if she's not saying it right.  She obviously knows what your name is!!!!!

  • You are not alone! And I'm glad I'm not either... My name is Brianne... Anyone see an "A" at the end of that? Anyone? *crickets* That's what I thought, but I CONSTANTLY get called Brianna. Seriously, all the time. I've had my current job for a year and 3 months, and still have coworkers calling me Brianna. As if it wasn't bad enough to be called Brianna by basically every substitute teacher growing up, I have to be called Brianna by people who should know better now. It irks me SO much. I think it gets to me the most because my dad's name is Brian and he knew before he even met my mom that he wanted a Brianne, but HATED Brianna.

  • I'm glad to know I'm not alone! Despite calmly explaining my name (again...), and asking her to say it correctly, she has said it incorrectly 4 more times. (even my other co-workers think she's just doing it to be annoying) Back to ignoring it, I guess!

Like one of you has said, I am also giving my child a name that is prounced exactly like it's spelled... if we have a boy, he will be Tucker. If we have a girl, she will be Aria. DH and I felt like they were both unique, but not too confusing. :)

Oh, and FWIW, I think all your names are beautiful, and if we ever meet, I will pronounce them correctly!! Big Smile

  • I would not answer to a name that was not mine either.  If she gets annoyed just tell her you have a name and if she uses it, you will answer.  If not, too bad.  Her ignorance is not your issue.

I will say I am horrible with names, but I would never call someone over to me by the wrong name.

Mine gets spelled the "boy" way quite frequently and that is irritating too....Erin not Aaron Big Smile

  • My name is Leigh, so I always get Lee-uh, Lay-uh, Lay...everything but what it really is.  I just answer to whatever's close.  My last name starts with an S so when I say my full name, everyone thinks I'm saying Lisa, so I've gotten that too.  Very frustrating.
  • Ugh... me too! I don't know if I can explain my name pronunciation in type, but I'll try. My name is Shana (Shan-na). I tell new people to help them remember it right that it rhymes with Donna. I get called Shay-na, ShAn-nA, Shawn-na, even Shannon. I will correct people a few times, but it gets old after that. When I answer the phone and someone says my name wrong, I say "this is Shana" pronouncing it correctly and they usually say "oh sorry". I had a science teacher in High School for two years in a row and she was my track coach also and she STILL pronounced my name wrong- for two years, after multiple corrections by both myself and friends. I have worked at the same job for 10 years and some of the bosses and co-workers still say my name wrong. Grr
  • I don't think anyone has ever mispronounced Jessica, but my husband's name is Jonas and EVERYYYYYYBODYYYYYY calls him Jonah. People I have worked with for three years call him Jonah. I am really close to most of my co-workers; we all know a lot about each others' families... how are they not picking up on the very obvious "s" at the end of his name? Even stranger... my grandmother calls him Jonah as well, and I give her a pass because she's old and lives in another state... however... she spells his name correctly in writing (greeting cards and such) so why drop the "s" when saying it out loud??
  • when I was younger (and still to this day, although she isnt my BFF anymore), my best friend pronounced my last name wrong 100% of the time. Drove me up the wall, and still does. I didnt mind when a random stranger said it wrong, or asked about the spelling, but her? Frustrated me to no end.

  • My name is Melissa and my neighbor just called the house and called me Michelle (this is after I offered to do her a favor).  Also, over the phone, I always get Martha for some reason.
