hives & rash won't go away after horrible reaction. help

Last night we had grilled tilapia with rice for dinner. He's had this meal 4 or 5 times now with ZERO reaction. Well last night he broke into horrible hives. It started on his cheeks then spread. After two bites he was turning red so we took it away and dosed him with benadryl. After about 20 minutes the hives were getting worse, including his lips swelling and becoming bubbly. The nurse was taking for ever to call back so I made the decision to drive to after hours clinic (5 minutes away)

by the time we got there the hives started to go away but he was still not feeling good. Then he threw up all over me in the waiting room. I felt terrible for him and felt like the worst mother ever...anyway the dr saw us right away. He gave us an epipen jr and instructions to use benadryl every 6 hours for 24 hours.

We have followed through with the benadryl around the clock but this morning and afternoon he's still so red and his skin is prickly. The nurse said to keep at it and tomorrow if things don't go down to bring him in the AM.

Is this normal? hes's never had a reaction like this so I'm clueless. I've never been so scared in my life for my child's life.  I didn't have a plan last night for this type of scenario. What an eye opener. I cut his fingernails short, he's had one oatmeal bath and he will have another after dinner. I'm still waiting for our new allergist to call back with an appointment time for re testing.

  • I'm so sorry :(

I'd work to get the toxins out created by the reaction.  An epsom salt bath with baking soda will really help.  The salt detoxes him and the baking soda will help with the rash.  When we have a reaction we also head to our chiro as chiropractic helps to calm both the immune system and central nervous system.

I hope he feels better soon!

Gosh I know this sounds horrible..Where can I get epsom salt? i've never used it. How much in the tub?

  • Any drug store. You can use between 1/2 cup to 2 cups before bed. No longer than 20 minutes or he can reabsorb the toxins pulled out. It will help relax him before bed (magnesium). The baking soda helps with the skin / rash. Our family uses it every other night religiously. Oh, don't let him drink the water it will give him the runs if he does.
  • The histamine sort of cycles thru their bodies & often will get better & then worse a few times before it goes away. What do you know that he is allergic to? If he has a wheat allergy, the oatmeal bath is most likely not made with Gluten free oats, so it may make things worse, unfortunately. DS is actually allergic to wheat & oats themselves & Aveeno brand products all contain both! Sucks cause they're supposed to be great for sensitive skin kids! Anyways, make sure you're dosing him with Benadryl every 6 hrs, that also means waking him up at night to do it too! If the reaction persists, he may need a dose of steroids to really get it calmed down. Good luck, hopefully he'll be a lot better in the morning!

  • So sorry! :(

My son broke out in a nasty case of hives after his Hep A vaccine... he was on a 'round the clock dosage of Benadryl. When that didn't work, we starting giving him a steriod on top of the Benadryl... when that didn't work, the pediatrician mentioned that some kids don't respond great to Benadryl and to try Zyratec, another OTC anti-histamine. We gave him his first dose of Zyratec at 6pm and he was hive free when he woke up the next morning! It worked wonders for him! Since then, I've heard similar stories.... maybe it's worth a shot with your little one?
