Formula feeders anyone switch to generic successfully?

We've been feeding LO Similac Sensitive and recently switched him to Target's Up and Up Sensitive formula because the ingredients were the same and it is about $8 cheaper.  However, since we switched LO seems to be drinking less in a sitting, but still drinking the same in a day and his poop is semi formed rather than being more runny like it has been since birth.  I'm concerned that 1. he doesn't like the taste which is why he is eating it in such small quantities and 2. that it is making him slightly constipated. He seems fussier when he has to go poop now which is why I am concerned about it.  The upside is that it isn't runny so we don't have to worry about it leaking or having a blow out.

So what I'm wondering is have you switched to a generic and your LO seemed to like the taste ok? And is the more formed poop something that just happens as they get older or could this be a side effect of the formula?

TIA

  • With Nicholas we switched from Similac to Target when he was just about your LO's age.  But he got constipated so we switched back to Similac.   I seem to remember towards the end (like when he was 10 or 11 months) of needing formula I switched back to Target and he did okay.

I really want to use Generic for Ava, but I may wait til she's a little older too.   Oh and if you look at reviews on Target Up and Up, a lot of people complain about constipation.

  • We switched from Similac to Target Up & Up after the recall last year. DD didn't even notice. If her poops changed, I didn't notice it.
  • We used Target Up & Up for DD... our pedi actually told us to use generic from day one when I had to supplement. DD had no issues with it at all (and we were able to switch between similac and the Target brand with no problems).

  • I had one that did fine on generic Enfamil and one that had to be on Similac Sensitive because the generic made her constipated.

Thank you!  I didn't look at the reviews I just figured that the ingredients were the same so no big deal.

  • Thanks ladies!  Maybe my LO just has a sensitive digestive system and that is why he is having more solid like poop.  I think I'll try switching back to similac and see if it resolves the poop problem and go from there.

We did but had to go back to Similac sensitive for fussiness & gas. He just couldn't poop on anything else.We REALLY wanted Target to work too but just couldn't hack it. He can't even drink Similac advance. You tried the target gentle right?

We may try target gentle after his birthday and once we have used up all our Similac stash. I know it will take alittle while to completely drop the formula.

  • Yep, Similac was recalled when D was about 7 months. I bought generic after that with no issues. D had gas issues and Simulac Sensitive worked well so I freaked about the change, but he didn't really care and all was good on the Tummy front.

  • We used name brand formula with both girls until about 3 months old (I slowly introduced formula with Madilynn at 1 month) and then switched to the Sam's Club brand.  We have had no problems with either girl and have saved a ton of money.

  • We tried to switch when Ava was an infant, but she had too many issues (constipation, wouldn't drink it, etc.).  With the twins, we started using Generic (Sam's Club version) from like the 2nd week, and they did fine.  I think that introducing it as early as possible (so they don't get "used to" the other) is the key.  Good luck!

  • I found with both girls that I wasn't able to switch to a generic (Costco brand) until they were 3 months old.  I tried several times when they were small and it always made them constipated.  It seemed their little tummies were tougher by age 3 months.

I used Enfamil for the first 3 months and then switched to the Kirkland brand.

  • I BF'd, but switched to FF at 6 months with DD.  She started on Enfamil, but around 8 months I switched her to Target Up and Up.  She did fine, but she was a lot older.  Maybe you can go back to Similac and try again when he is a bit older?  GL!

This.  We were using (and continued to use ) the RS version.

  • I haven't switched from Similac, but just wanted to let you know that they sell larger containers of Similac at Costco for only a few bucks more than what the smaller ones run at Target. I also use the $5 checks from Similac at Costco, so that helps even more! :0)
