Ughhhhh I didn't even think about my stash. And I was just coming on here to start a "biitch about Irene" thread.
I was just deciding if I really should go buy canned food and bread and jugs of water. We are also supposed to fly out Monday morning, assuming there is still an airport to fly out of harhar. There is talk of evacuating, or partially evacuating, the city... but the site is down from so many people checking that I can't see if we are in an evacuation neighborhood. Ballz. We may have to bail and go stay with family who is an hour inland in NJ. I have a small stash and a little ice pack, maybe I should make lots of ice cubes in case we have to leave.
I'm not in the path, but seen this somewhere about saving all food. Go get as many milk jugs, pop bottles, large tupperware containers you can find and fill them with water and freeze. They take longer to thaw and so will keep things colder longer.
Newpaper is an insulator (I was instructed to pack my milk in it to send to the milk bank) so fill any extra space with that.
Stuff everything as close together as you can and surround with the frozen water and newspaper.
This won't save things if you're out for too long, but hopefully it can give you some extra time. I'm hoping for the best for all of you! Stay safe.

This is much more doable than finding dry ice. Thanks for posting!
I am so not looking forward to a trip to the store to get hurricane supplies. You know everything is already cleaned out because people are freaking nuts. $5 says our store is already out of bread and water.

OH yeah. People here are maniacs. I am staying far far away from the stores.
Thank you for the tips croberts. With everything else that needs to get done I keep forgetting about the milk situation. I had no clue what to do with it! I will try all of that and pray the power comes back quick!
Here is another bit of advice, I'm from the Outer Banks and we go through these lovely hurricanes all the time. This might sound weird, but it will save your butt. Most of the time, our little island likes to cut off the power and water while the storm comes through and most of the time we dont get it back for a few days. Wash your bathtub up really well with plain HOT water and dawn dish soap. Then fill the tube all the way up to the top with water. Use this water to put in your toilet so you can flush, use it to put in a bowl for birdbaths, or any other task you might need water for. If you have a grill, then put some of the water in a pot, put it on the grill and heat it up if hot water is needed. Again, weird advice, but many of you who have not gone through a hurricane may not think about this. Good Luck!

Stupid Irene, I'm sick of you already.
