pointers on saving money on (healthy) groceries?

i am very motivated to save money when i want another baby but we can't TTC because our savings account is at zero. so i'm trying to figure out how to save money, and our huge monthly grocery bills (probably $700+) seem like a place to start. however, it seems like even when i'm trying to be frugal we always go over budget when we try to cut food expenses. any advice on spending less on groceries while still eating healthy?

TIA for any ideas!

  • go with only the amount of cash you want to spend in your hand and add things up as you go along...  Its scary, but it works!

meal planning so that you only buy what you need, not getting pre-packaged/processed convenience foods, shopping for whats on sale and freezing extras, taking advantage of getting some things at discount stores like Aldi's (not sure if you have those buy you, but there are lots of store chains like that).   also, if you have the space for even a small container garden, planting things like tomatoes, zucchinis, cucumbers, and peppers have saved us some money and kept us in fresh produce for a while

  • We are currently trying to cut our budget in half... Our methods so far have been meal planning (and planning on/for leftovers), shopping more at Trader Joe's, and looking for sales. We also freeze anything that might have otherwise gone bad before we would have used all of it in the past.

  • Buy local and in season
  • Meal plan and cook in bulk and eat the same thing for a meals.  Cook from scratch not prepackaged foods that can add up big time!

  • Buy in season and on sale only. I've currently got a family of 4 living on $200 a month for groceries, and we do very few convenience foods. I only buy meat on sale, and will stock up and freeze the extra when I can get a good deal. I buy the less popular cuts, which are less expensive, and that saves $$ too. Buying produce that is in season, and planning our meals around that helps too. Make things from scratch (waffles, pumpkin pancakes, and quick breads) doesn't take too long, but can save $$.

Right now we also qualify for WIC, and that has been a great help as it provides the girls' soy milk, Jules' supplemental formula, and other basics like bread, cheese, beans, and cereals. I was surprised we qualified at our income, but it has been a big help in stretching our grocery budget and providing basics for our pantry.
