What do dr.s typically recommend?

So I think I might have PPD and plan to talk to my dr. What do they typically prescribe to help with thiis?. Do you have to go to therapy? I noticed many posters said they went through their primary. How come you didnt go through your OBGYN?

Re: What do dr.s typically recommend?

  • I went to my primary doctor because i had other things going on with me that i didnt know what was the matter. It was only after many tests that they determined i had ppd/ppa.  That is why i didnt go through my ob.  I now have transferred my care to a psychiatrist.  They know more about what medications are best to prescribe than the PCPs.  I am on Zoloft for depression and anxiety. It is working so far.  I also am able to take Ativan as needed for anxiety.  My psychiatrist recommended seeing a therapist, which i am really excited to start doing.. I just want someone to talk to about how i have been feeling.  GL!

  • I went to see my doctor. She put me on Lexapro 10 mg and see a counselor. It has been 2 weeks, so far so good. I was skeptical on the counselor but I actually enjoy it. GL

  • Can I ask, if there are any side effects that you notice with these meds? Ex, low libido, extra drowsy(although we are all so exhausted already). Do they interupt the effectiveness of birth control. Also, I am nervous to go to a counselor. Do you feel like you just talk about the same thing, how you  are overwhelmed, anxious, etc? I feel like there's not a whole lot to say to her except the typical struggles of motherhood. Any feedback is helpful.

  • Cont' from previous post.  I enjoy it because I get to talk about it and get things off my chest.. I guess more less time for ME. I always put 100% into my boys. No time for me!! Which I know I need to give some time for myself..  Walks, read a book, take a nice bath.. etc.

  • The only side effects i have had from the zoloft is some night sweats, and nausea. But i have minimized these by taking my medication at dinner time.  The anxiety i am feeling centers around my health.  I had some different pains etc and i thought i was dying.. i felt like i had all these diseases. and its all because i dont want to leave LO without a mommy.  I also get anxious about his health.. i have a real hard time dropping him off at the sitters, and going to work.  My anxiety manifests itself as heartburn really bad.  I am doing better but its a struggle i have daily.  i am not sure about the BC effectiveness. that is something you can check.  ZOloft is recommended for nursing mothers too.  Its considered safe.

  • My primary care dr is the one treating me. But I am really unhappy about this.  I just started zoloft, and do feel better taking it, but the first visit she said she wanted to up it in 2 weeks, then again in 2 more weeks. I really feel like ppd is not the right diagnosis.  I think I am more neurotic/obessive compulsive, and this is making me a little depressed right now.  She didn't ask any questions, just medicated me, and this was after I asked her to recommend a therapist, because I really don't want to be on medication.

  • Thanks ladies, my OBGYN just prescibed 50 mg of Zoloft for me. Hopefully it goes well.
