3rd Trimester

High BP without being high?

I am an avid runner (prepreg) and cardio conditioned so my BP usually runs 85/60 or so before I was pregnant. Which is really low, and I'm prone to dizzy spells if I stand up too fast but for me its just always been normal.

Now that I'm well into 3rd tri my BP is up to 125/80 which isn't enough to be "high bp" but for me is a HUGE jump. Had I started anywhere near normal BP this would be crazy high BP.

I was just wondering if anyone else who normally runs low had big jumps now that they are pregnant? Does your doctor seem concerned, or since its technically still int the normal ranges...is that just to be expected?

  • Not that big of a jump, but I'm currently at 118 for my systolic which is high for me. I asked about that at the last appointment and they said since it's still considered a normal bp, they're not concerned.

  • I've never been a runner, but I see what you're talking about. My assumption would be that since your BP is still within the 'normal' limits, you should be fine. I would think if your doctor had any concerns they would have addressed it with you. I hope you find your answer!
  • When I test at home, my BP is usually around the 110's/60's. As soon as I go to the doc, it jumps to the 130's/80's. Sometimes it even stays a little above 90 for my diastolic. If they show concern they will send you for urine/blood work to make sure everything looks good. Maybe you possibly have some white coat syndrome like I do. Try testing at home and see what you get.
  • Has it been consistently that high, or was this just at your last appointment?  Sometimes the nurses screw up the readings, and sometimes you can just have an off day as well.  If your blood pressure has not been consistently increasing, I'd be skeptical of that reading.

How are you feeling otherwise?  Have all of your other measurements been normal?

If your BP is consistently increasing or consistently measuring that high, or if your vitals or other tests have also been off, I would be a little concerned and definitely ask my doctor for advice.  I'm a runner as well (though I swim now because I fell at 22 weeks), and have not noticed an increase during my pregnancy (though my BP was never as low as yours--it's been around 100/60-115/70, and that variation has always been normal for me).
