Success after IF

How did you get your baby to hold their own bottle consistently?

My Babies are capable of holding their own bottles as they've done it before.  They won't hold them on their own consistently though.  We hold their bottles for them most of the time.

Is there something I'm missing?  Should I be doing something to get them to hold their own bottles or is this just another thing that they will pick up on their own?

Thanks!

  • Mine started just about a week before we took the bottle away for good and switched to his sippy. I remember thinking - "now you decide to do it" lol
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • I have no idea.  Jacob never held his bottle consistently.  He would do it every once in a while, so I knew he could do it.  But he never did it regularly.

Whew!  Thank you!  You just made me feel so much better!  I'm always worrying that they're behind other kids.

I found that reclining him helped.  I'd put him in my lap for a snuggle, hold the bottle, wrap his hands around it and then let go.  he seemed to figure it out, but it was still about 13 months before he did it on his own
  • Anna didn't do it consistently until 10 months...  drove me nuts!    I can only imagine with twins how much easier it would be if they figured it out!

I will say, however, that she was much more likely to do it if I propped her up on a boppy pillow on the floor.   Something about that angle/support/set up seemed helpful to her.

  • with our first we found the handles for the born free cups - once we started to move beyond bottles into sippys.  With the second I tried the handles out when she was about 4 months and by 5 months she was holding her own bottle - we took the handles off totally by 7 months - I'm sure that the handles would work for any bottles but you may have to buy the whole Born Free sippy set-up to set the handles.  Good Luck!

P.S.  Our first did not hold her own bottle - not until she started to move back and forth between sippy cups and bottles.
