No, i hate that word. I have, on occasion (and usually in a silly way) told him to stop being a punk. But any real discipline or discussion about behavior takes place without any name calling.
I have exactly once. And it's notable because my younger sister could spell the word by the time she was 2.5/3. We called her it SO OFTEN. And it would send her in to a huge fit. So it strikes close to home in that I remember how upset she would get when we (incl. my parents) would call her that. It was like torture for her. I would say pain in theass before brat -- not sure that is any better though! LOL But we are talking specifically about the word brat so I'll say, I've said it once!
I loathe that word. Makes me want to throat punch the person using it.
I do refer to the guys as heathen when they act crazy. I tell them they need a modicum of decorum in public because most people have no idea what that means. Hell, the boys have told me I need decorum n occasion :oP
OMG! Only in Nestworld would brat be equated with the F bomb or other taboo expressions! I've never heard of a kid seeking therapy or CPS busting the door for saying, "Quit being such a brat!".

Really??? Are you for serious??!? I think it is in very poor taste to call my kids hurtful demeaning names. Go clutch you pearls somewhere else.

DINGDINGDING!!! We have a winner! Congrats on thinking it's cool to call your kid names!
There is a difference when using a name in humor v using one out of anger.
Ya'll you be jackpissed if some slore in target called your child a brat- what makes it any better coming out of his Mama's mouth?
Sorry, I live in the real world, not a politically correct, never speak above a whisper, perfect mom fake institution where my kid is going to be dumbstruck upon entering the real world themselves. It's a lighthearted term in my house. I guess I'm just okie white trash b/c none of you have ever used that word.

LOL, I assure you I know I am FAR from a perfect mom. Nor do I think my child will be dumbstruck upon entering "the real world." I'm fairly certain my child lives among us in the real world even as we speak.
I'm not really sure what "fake institution" you're speaking of? A world where I speak to my child with respect and expect that same respect in return? There are LOTS of words we don't say to eachother in our house bc they are simply disrespectful. And there are better ways, IMO, of teaching your child to be respectful than by disrespecting them through name calling.
Agree to disagree. It wouldn't be the first time. The only kids you have to raise are yours and the only one I've got to raise is mine.
no, I've never called my kid a brat. I have called him a pain in my tushy, a farthead and various other names while joking. The word 'brat' annoys me and also feels kind of 1980.
No, and I don't tell her that she is bad either. I hear that a lot as well. It makes me cringe.
Sometimes I tell my DD that she is being naughty and that even makes me feel bad.
how is naughty preferable to bad? Isn't the point that you want to say her behavior is bad or naughty, not her?
I don't know. It just doesn't seems as bad if I say, "You are being naughty" rather than saying, "You are being bad". Personal preference, I guess. Plus, I said that I didn't really like saying naughty either. Obviously, I am calling her behavior naughty and not her, but I don't think she gets that. Sometimes she will ask if she is a naughty girl, and I say no, sometimes you do things that are naughty or not very nice.
Yes, I have told DS1 on occasion that he is acting like a spoiled brat. Especially when we leave Target and he's throwing a temper tantrum because he wasn't allowed to get a toy. I guess I just don't see it as an offensive term. If he's acting like a brat I'm going to call him on it.

Me with my littlest.

Soooo.... I should stop telling L he is a turdbucket.
Or that he is nastycakes (when picking his but).
::notes to self::
I've told DS to stop acting like a spoiled brat. Clutch those pearls, girlie.

When he is being naughty, I tell him that behavior in not appropriate and unacceptable. And that he is being a turdbucket.

Never to his face.
Other things I have never called him to his face: punk, as$hole, pain in my ass.
Things I will call him to his face: turd, nerd, stinky.
You take my ovaries, I take your yarns.
I big time prefer "little effers" to "brat." I don't know why calling a child a brat (whether or not it is in front of them) is really yuck to me.
Do I say: "You're a brat?" Nope.
Do I say: "You're acting like a brat?" Yep. Often.
Chalk it up as one more topic on the very long list of things my kids can discuss during therapy.
Hahaha! Spot on.
And no, I've never said that to them.
