October 2011 Moms

Time to stop?

I teach 4th grade.  My commute is an hour both ways.  I've been leaving school exhausted - backache, headache, hard uterus all day, swelling legs and feet, chest pain and just extreme exhaustion.  Is this the sign everyone talks about that it's time to stop working?  I'm afraid I'll work myself into a sickness.  Or I'll work and then go into labor and never have a minute to recover!  I'm not due until October 8th, but I'd love to be done by the 8th of September. . . but then I feel like I'm quitting.  I go to see my doctor again next Wednesday.

Any words of advice??

  • I think most gals on here will tell you that you know your body best so you need to decide.

I was in the same boat you are in a few weeks ago, talked to my doctor, and she suggested I stop working.  She was very supportive and ready to sign all the paperwork required.  Another gal on here made a great point, your doctor only knows what you tell him/her about your work situation - so telling them your situation is important - don't assume they know you are uncomfortable and having a hard time.

  • Definately talk to your doctor---if they are like mine they will let you make the call until they decide they need to.

I decided when to go down to a partial work day. When I wanted to keep on partial days instead of bedrest, she agreed to let me---until I showed up in L&D after a day of work and she just asked "so are you ready to quit now or did you want these babies to show up next week?"

Don't feel like you're "quitting" --- you're going to be "quitting" for maternity leave anyway right?!? I felt immensely guilty when I had partial days and then now that I'm not working and still getting paid and finally someone laid it out for me 00 you have STD insurance, this is what its for! If your car was dented in a hail storm, you'd call your insurance company and expect them to fix it---how is this different?

    Agree!

  • Get the Docs note.  Stop, sit, relax and finish growing that baby.  You are not quitting, you are making a sensible choice for your baby and taking an opportunity that will not come to you again to physically and mentally prepare for the baby in a stressfree, healthy environment.
