we just got done with a kindermusik birth to 18 mos session. It was 5 weeks, but a few mom's with kids 12-18 mos dropped out because they didn't think their babies got enough out of the class. Our instructor sent out an email deeply discounting the rates (I paid $35 for 4 weeks) to a local MOM group and I jumped in then.
I took one baby at a time and left the other baby home with a sitter. Classes lasted about 40 minutes.
There's a warm up song where the babies do what can best be described as calisthenics while the mommies/instructor sings. Things like toe touches, bouncing, tapping their feet, etc. Then there are songs through the whole class and the babies are either given instruments or toys and the moms do a lot of the work (lifting, bouncing, dancing, etc.) It was a workout
I thought the class was kind of silly, but my kids laughed and interacted with other babies and got some one on one time with me, so it was worth it.
p.s. the reason why the 2 mom's with older kids dropped out was because they were the only ones with older kids. The other 6 moms all had kids that were between 4 and 7 mos. I think had there been more older kids in the class it would have been fine...
I did Music Together music classes with my older daughter starting when she was ~5 months old and she loved them. I went a lot with her (at the time, I was working so, often, our nanny brought her) and I will say it was a pretty high energy, fun class but the music was a little hokey (you can download some of their songs on itunes, I believe). They did give us a CD each session of the songs and highlighted a different instrument/family each session (strings, drums, etc) and the music focused on that and my daughter loved listening to the music out of the class.
Based on how great music classes were for my older daughter, I signed my younger up for Kindermusik (no Music Together where I am now) around the same age. I was a little disappointed. My daughter liked them okay but I found it pretty low energy and the music wasn't as original or fun for kids. I don't know if this was just my experience or how Kindermusik is always b/c I had never done it before. That said, for a baby, I think they're totally fine and not something he'll get bored with at all. My daughter definitely seemed happy when we were there...I was playing with her, moving around to the music and she was interacting with other kids. But, I don't think I would do it for a toddler, at least my older daughter would've been a bit bored.
We have been doing kindermusik for a year in sept & we love it! It has been the highlight of Eliza's week since she started. Our instructor is really smart & has been doing this forever. You get some really nice materials - books, CDs & an instrument each session. We did Village last fall & spring. We did sign & sing in the spring too & she really learned a lot! Over the summer we did oceans & few playdate sessions. This fall we are signed up for Our Time.
Eliza loves music & playing with the kids. I enjoy meeting the other moms & watching e have such a good time. I feel like I have learned a lot too, but like I said, our instructor is amazing!

Oh & our instructor let's you drop at any time & she will do a partial refund based on how much time is left in the session. She also encourages parents to take a class for free before they sign up to see if they like it.

I did 2 sessions of Kindermusik with DD. We started when she was about 16 months old. She liked it, but it was in the teacher's basement and DD spent most of the time trying to get up the (ungated) stairs. The first session was only 6 weeks, so it was cheaper. The next session was 12 weeks and a lot more expensive. The kids ranged from 18 months-3 years, and at first DD had a hard time following directions and participating. By the end, she was doing the activities but got bored quickly. I should add that she's not a sit still kind of kid, and the classes didn't offer as much movement as I would have liked (at least in the older class... the 6-18 month class was a bit better. For example, we spent the beginning of several sessions choosing puppets and then going around a circle having all the kids tell what animal/animal sound they had. It was very hard for DD to sit through that!
We had fun, but honestly, I just can't justify spending $250 when I spend half the time chasing DD away from the steps, and when her favorite part was snacktime She does ask for the teacher occasionally and some of the kids, but we'll do different (cheaper!) classes this fall and I'm sure she'll have just as much fun in those
I can't believe how much people's experiences vary with Kindermusik! Ours is in a preschool room at a church and it busy and engaging from the moment we get there. I think it must have a lot to do with the instructor.

Thank you so much for all the responses.
Emmylou- I agree that the instructor probably makes a big difference.
They do offer a free class so we will go to that and if he likes it I will inquire about a shorter session.
