Formal Name

We have decided to name our son Teddy.  I am torn on whether or not we should name him Theodore and call him Teddy or just name him Teddy.  I do not plan to call him Theodore, but my husband likes the option of calling him Theo.  I am torn, thoughts?

Re: Formal Name

  • Theodore is a front runnner for us. I think Teddy as a stand alone is kind of ridiculous. Sorry.

  • Please give him a formal name. Teddy is cute for a child under the age of 10 after that, not so much.
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • Teddy is a nickname, IMO.  Name him Theodore or even Ted if you must.  Teddy won't age well.  He's going to have to fill out job applications someday, no one will take him seriously if he writes "Teddy" on it, they'll think it's a nickname anyway.

  • I like Theodore because it gives your son options. If he wants to put Teddy on his business cards, he certainly can, but he might prefer Theodore (or Theo).

  • I would go with Theodore so he would have more options as an adult. I went to a Dr. Ted but I couldn't imagine a Dr. Teddy even as a pediatrician.

  • I agree that you should use Theodore. When he's an adult making his resume, it'll be nice for him to have a grownup name to use. Plus, if your husband likes the option of Theo, then by using Theodore, you both win. :)

  • I agree with PP and giving your son a formal name.  Teddy is cute for when he is little but not when he is a teen or an adult.

I'd go with Theodore or Thaddeus.

  • imagemj.reilly:

    I would name him Theodore.

Can you really imagine Dr. Teddy ... Officer Teddy ... Judge Teddy? I can't even picture an adult named Teddy.

LOL @ Officer Teddy. It makes me picture my son's stuffed bear that wears a police uniform.

  • Definitely go with Theodore. Teddy is just not full name material.
  • Theodore!

  • Another one here who thinks that you absolutely need a formal name for Teddy. Teddy will never work on an adult, at least not in a professional setting.

  • The fact that I laughed out loud at the though of someone filling out job applications with Teddy really says something. Growing up I had the best dog named Teddy, I miss him.
