LMP vs Ovulation to calculate due date

My dr's office used my LMP to determine my due date.  However, I know I O'd a few days later than the text book day 14.  With DD I O'd right on day 14 & she was actually born on her due date.  I'm just curious w/ this one if I don't deliver by my dr's due date, if I want to give it a few more days knowing I O'd a few days later??  I kind of want to avoid being induced if possible.  I don't know if either one is really more accurate than the other; it's only days & LO could decide to arrive anytime he/she pleases anyway.

Re: LMP vs Ovulation to calculate due date

  • If you were charting and know for sure when you O, then I would go with that date.  LMP are NOT accurate for most women.

I hate it when people say that it isn't a big deal either way...because at the end of your pregnancy when many women are being pressured to induce for date reasons, it IS a big deal.

I've been trying to convince myself it's not a big deal, but you're right, it will be a HUGE deal to me @ the end if they're trying to push for induction.  I will give myself the extra days & go from there.  Hopefully LO won't make it any harder than that :)

  • If you are concerned then I would discuss this with your doctor and see what she says in terms of induction -- how far would she let you go.

Becuase we used fertility treatments - I know exactly when I ovulated.  But we using the due date based on my first u/s  - 6weeks.  We did this with my last son also -- and same scenario.  I went into labor 2 days after my due date based on that u/s.

    Good Luck.

  • When does your doctor typically want to induce? My office won't schedule an induction any earlier than 10 days past your due date.

I totally agree with every single word of this.

If you know for sure when you O'd, your EDD is 38 weeks after the O date. This is a LOT more accurate; the LMP method is only used because most women have no idea whatsoever when they ovulate.

This is my main reason for insisting we go by my O date rather than LMP. As you can see in my chart, I didn't O until CD29. Luckily my midwife had no problem taking my word for it, and my dating u/s matched my O date.

Talk to your doctor about this and really stress that you want to avoid an induction unless medically necessary. IMO, it's ridiculous to pressure a woman into an induction for dating reasons if she is under 42 weeks. Not everyone feels the same way, though. GL!

  • Maybe your doctor will get a better look at your EDD after your A/S.  I know babies grow at different rates but perhaps your OB will see that your baby is "measuring small" from your LMP EDD and adjust.  Some OB's change EDD's while other's will not.

Also know that you have every right to turn down an induction request if you feel that you want to give it more time.  It's your body and your baby.
