Not rolling yet?

It seems like most May mamas have babies that are rolling at least one way already. Should I be concerned that Charlotte isn't there yet? I figured she'd do the back to tummy first so I try to work with her on it, but she doesn't seem too interested. Is there something I should be doing? It's not like she just lays there (she constantly kicks - feet always moving), but it just doesn't seem like she cares to roll.

  • My Charlotte isn't rolling yet either.  She can get to her side, but that's it.  Like your's its not like she just lays there, she's moving and wiggling all over, just isn't rolling yet.

Here's a site I found that lists what they should be doing when in the first year: https://www.americanpregnancy.org/firstyearoflife/firstyeardevelopment.html  According to it, babies don't roll until the 5th month.  I planned on asking my pedi at Charlotte's 4 month appt unless she does it before them.

  • I think tummy-to-back is much easier, and typically the way they roll first.  Lila will sometimes roll t-t-b, but has only rolled once b-t-t.  When Lila is done with tummy time, I always "help" roll her to her back before picking her up.  But, I don't know if she gets it.  I wouldn't be really concerned, but I would probably just mention it to the pedi at the next appointment.

  • My baby has rolled once maybe twice, and I'm not sure if she wasn't already kinda crooked on her boppy in the first place. I'm not worried. I think she will be just fine. Another May Mamma said this before and I think it applies here: "Don't compare your baby to anyone elses, it will drive you crazy." Also, every baby is different, they will mature at their own pace.

  • Lydia will be 4 months old tomorrow, and she still isn't rolling. She's got her 4 month well baby check up and shots on Aug. 30th, so I'll ask her FNP when we see her. I'm not too concerned though. Layla was late with almost everything, and she is just fine now. Like PPs said, try not to compare, it'll eat you alive if you do!
  • No rolling, but I"m not concerned.  She was a late May baby, just turned 3 months.  Some of the babies here have 3+ weeks on her. :)  Things will happen when they happen, I'm in no rush.
  • Kingston is 3 1/2 months and not rolling.  He is very active and LOVES tummy time, but no rolling.

  • Emma isn't really even close.  And she is terrible at tummy time - barely lifts her head (though she can, she just doesnt like doing it).

I'm not concerned.  She just turned 3 months, and I don't know any adults who cant lift their head or roll over, so she will get there eventually.  I don't think there is any evidence that early rolling leads to higher SAT scores. :)

Point being - don't worry about it!  She will get there

  • My LO isn't rolling over either. He absolutely hates tummy time so he's much more concerned with crying than rolling over.
  • Ari is 4 months old today and just started rolling from tummy to back yesterday.

He had a "fluke roll" at 3 weeks or so from back to tummy...but it never happened again.

  • My twins will be 4 months next Friday and DS has been rolling back to tummy for a week or two now.  DD has no interest in rolling either direction.  I've seen her go tummy to back a couple timse but I'm not sure if those were fluke rolls since she's not consistently rolling.  she loves to roll onto her side when she sleeps though.
  • Zoe is just about 14 weeks and has never even attempted rolling.  Of course, until two days ago, she wanted nothing to do with tummy time so hasn't had much opportunity.  I'm fine with her staying where I put her for as long as possible!
