Recommend your umbrella stroller

We don't go out often where we need a stroller because most of the stores have carts and since he is in daycare, I don't take him to lots of places during the week. For trips where we do need a stroller I am getting tired of lugging my big travel system stroller around.

Oh, and he NEVER sleeps in the stroller. If he is out and there is any action or people to watch he is awake.

Should I just get a cheap umbrella stroller or is it worth it to spend a little more? What stroller do you have and do you love it?

Re: Recommend your umbrella stroller

  • We have the Joovy Kooper and have been really happy with it. It folds up like an umbrella stroller, but is a little more sturdy than a cheapo. You can find them on Amazon for about $130 usually.

G doesn't really use a stroller much anymore, but I like having one for him just in case. We'll probably buy a 2nd for B so we have two of them in case we need it.

  • Maclaren Volo. It has a simple mesh seat and does not recline, but does have a small canopy and nice wheels for bumpy sidewalks.

  • We have a MacLaren Quest.  It's a little on the pricy side for an "umbrella" stroller, but I like that it's sturdy and wears well.  DS rarely wants in the stroller, though, so we only take it if we are going somewhere where he will be walking a LOT.  In fact, I don't think I am even going to bother getting a double for #2, since I don't think DS would want to ride, anyway (might be a different story when he sees baby sister in it, though!  lol.)
  • We have the Chicco Capri, I think it's around $70 so not "cheap" but not in the same league as the $160 ones that most everyone on here recommends.  I really liked the Maclaren but I just couldn't justify spending that much for how little we use it.  Like you, he's in daycare so I'm not running around w/ him all day, most stores have carts, and most of the time we go anywhere on weekends DH and I are together and DH would rather just carry him when he gets tired of walking.

I've been very happy with it, but we don't use it very often.  I looked at the super cheap umbrella strollers but my DH is really tall and has to hunch over to reach the handles on them because they are so small/short, otherwise I might have bought the $19.99 one.  Smile

I usually take my Bob if we're going somewhere all-day or out doors like to the zoo.  And we use the Bob for walks in the neighborhood.  The chicco lives in the back of the car.

  • I wouldnt go "cheap" like the $20 one at BRU because they have no sort of storage and if you/your dh are over 5'5", it will feel short (I feel hunched over and I'm 5'6").  We got this only for air travel so that we arent out money if they damage it at gate check.

Because my DH is 6'6", we ended up getting the Cybex Onyx despite the price because it was taller than most and allowed him to walk with his longer stride and not kick the back.   We've loved it and I'm planning to just use it as my "travel system" with baby #2 when I don't have both kids with me.

  • We bought the The First Years Jet Stroller.  I would not recommend it.  It was only $39.99 and was taller than most umbrella strollers and it worked great for the first few times we used it.  We bought it for a trip to New Jersey in July.  It was great at the airport and folds up like an umbrella stroller.  The problem, it has been in the trunk of my car for a couple of weeks and when we used it this past Saturday the foot strap broke right where it bends when the stroller is folded.  It also didn't seem to be pushing smoothly, like something was rubbing on the tires.  At first I thought it was the foot strap, so we cut those off and it still doesn't seem right.

  • I'm tall and I bought a cheap one from Target and learned really quickly that it was ridiculously short for me.     I tested strollers out at BRU and wound up with the Chicco Capri.  We like it.

I ordered mine online because BRU didn't have the color I wanted.   It is pricier than the cheap umbrella strollers but not too expensive.

I just looked online and most of the box stores are selling them for $79 but you can get them from Amazon for $59.  It's been a while since I got mine but I think we paid about $60 for it.

  • Thanks for the great suggestions. I haven't test driven any yet and didn't realize how short they might be. I'm 5'9" and have a pretty long stride and don't want to keep kicking it.

Oh, and thanks for letting me know what NOT to get. Those are sometimes the most helpful reviews.  :-)

  • I have the $30 cheapy from BRU as a backup stroller. I'm 5'6 and have to hunch to push it. Its not *terrible* but i wish it were 2 inches taller. The one I have has a removable canopy and it does have a hanging mesh bag with a phone pocket for some storage.
  • Maclaren Volo.  It is awesome, it is actually my most used item from my baby shower.  It is still in regular use and has worn very well.

  • I have been debating between the UppaBaby G-Luxe and the Maclaren Triumph, myself. DH is tall and needs one with a high handle. We want recline, though.

I've also eyed the Uppa G-Lite and Maclaren Volo.  We need an umbrella pretty desperately. Our big stroller is so bulky.

LOVE my G-Luxe.  It's DD's favorite stroller.  She likes it more than the Baby Jogger right now.  I definitely like the recline on it.  We've needed it several times when she has fallen asleep in it.  There was a recall on them, but the company was awesome.  Notified us quickly, sent us a box and label to ship it back for free and they shipped us a brand new one.

  • another vote for maclaren Volo, love ours.
