I am really nervous about potty training

I haven't started yet, but I will soon.  I'm pretty sure she's ready. Although I really don't want to force it either.  I have no idea how to even begin the training.  Do ya'll know of any books or anything?  I am at a complete loss and unfortunately I don't have anyone to ask IRL either.

  • I didn't force it at all. I waited until she was ready...which happened to be while we were on vacation in Charleston for my brother's wedding in May.  She just suddenly became obsessed with wanting to use the potty and would actually go in it.  We just followed her cues for that trip and about a week or so before moving her into panties (once we were back home and settled into our routine.)

The first few weeks were crazy.  She was so obsessed and would go like 50 times a day!  I would give one M&M for peepee in the potty and 2 M&M's for poopoo.  However, she was completely potty trained in just 2-3 days in panties!  My mom says that she was the easiest child she has ever seen to train...and I credit all of that to waiting for her to be ready (before that she was completely inconsistent when we would try before bathtime each night.)

I will also say that we are still not 100% at nighttime.  She does great in panties during naps, but we are still wearing pull-ups for the night.  She was doing great, but then all of the sudden this week she has wet her pull up 3 nights in a row.

Get ready!  It is a little crazy because you feel like you have to drop everything and run everytime they say they need to go.  You just never know if they really have to go or not!

    GL!

  • Thank you Seaside.  .When did you start putting panties on her?

We're going to be out of town next weekend so I was going to get a potty chair the following week and see how she does.  If I think she's not getting it, I'll back off for a while.

Even though I haven't started yet,  it feels likes it's going to be a long road.

  • Yep I am getting nervous about this as well.  She's all about the potty, will follow me every time I go, constantly saying I potty, etc.  We haven't started training yet...I'm waiting until her birthday in October to see if she's still showing interest.  I have heard that they sometimes show interest early, then they lose it, and that they probably weren't ready yet, but then sometimes they show it and never lose it.  I am hoping for the latter because I'd love to be out of diapers soon.  She hates to be wet or dirty, and she even tells me when she's about to poop.  I am considering when the time comes to do the three day thing.  A friend of mine did it and had success, so I am reading up on it.

I can't believe it's time to even be thinking about this lol...seems like they were just born!

  • What's the three day thing?

B hates to be dirty too.  She has bee showing interest for a while.  I kept saying I was going to wait till she turns 2 (which I still might), but I have to switch her to a big girl bed soon.  She is outgrowing the crib fast.  The other day she got her leg stuck between the rails.  Speaking of that...

WHich would ya'll do first?  Potty train or convert to big bed?  I have no idea.  I do know that you shouldnt intoduce 2 big changes at once.  So I might buy a potty chair for her to get use to, but maybe convert her to a big girl bed first.  So she doesn't get hurt.

I actually think we're going to be doing both of these at the same time. I want him to be able to get out of bed and go to the pot if he needs to. But if you have to choose one to do first I guess I would suggest the bed...Or I am confusing this and you're already doing the toddler bed?  When I said both I was meaning converting from crib to toddler or big bed.  I'm trying to see if we can budget for big mattress/box spring right now.

Thank you Seaside.  .When did you start putting panties on her?

We got back from Charleston on Thursday night and started panties on Monday.  I wanted to make sure that she was still "interested" once we back in our routine.

I will add that she showed a period of being very interested around 20 months, but then completely lost interest.  We did, however, continue taking with us to the potty, and asking her to sit on it every night before taking a bath...just to try and make her comfortable with it.

Let's see, my brother's wedding was May 1, and we transitioned to the toddler bed in mid-June.  I was actually just tired of her screaming, "Mommy, I need to go potty" in the middle of the night.  Even though she could climb in her crib, she never tried to climb out.

Oh, and my daughter would not use the small potty chair at ALL!  She did much better with our toilet and the small seat on it...but really just likes to use the toilet the good ole regular way.

  • I don't really know much about the three day thing yet...when I read up on it I'll let you know.

As for switching her to a toddler bed, we aren't doing it yet.  She isn't climbing out and so I am not going to push it right now.  So unless something changes over the next couple of months I kind of figure we'll do the potty training thing first.  But I have learned with toddlers you just never know lol.

  • I have a copy of the 3day potty training that I'd be happy to send to anyone who wants it.

Email me at hatsbysarah@gmail.com and I"ll send it out on Tuesday when I get to my work computer.

For us - the thought of it was scarier than the actual execution of it.  we did a loose interpretation of the 3 day potty training method because I also needed to work it into my schedule.  Ditch the pull ups (although we put A. in them at night because I'm just too damn tired to deal with the occassional accidents).

Trust them to tell you they will go.  This was the most stressful for me.  I kept on asking A. if she had to go worried about her peeing somewhere and it was just all stressful.  When I let go a little and let her lead the way, it was very quick
