I love The Godfather, too. Its like the greatest movie of all time, but I still wouldn't name my kid after Sonny.

In fact, if I had to pick one character from that movie to name my kid after, it'd be Michael.

Michael for a boy.

It makes me think of Sonny Bono and Sonny Barger (founding member of the Hells Angels). Neither people I would name a son after. I think it would make a cute nickname. I think Sunny would be a cute nn for a girl as well (my dogs name is Sunny).

My friend's nephew is Sonny. His first name is Santino. I think it's really cool, but I would definitely use a more formal name and Sonny for a NN.

All I can picture is an old man talking to a young man, saying "now Sonny, back in my day..." Definitely not a fan. I think its an acceptable nickname, though.

I like it, especially as a nn, but probably because it is more common here in NZ. It is very manly - I instantly think of All Black Sonny Bill Williams - rugby player, league player and boxer.

Maybe as a nickname... But definitely not as a full name.

And I also thought of The Godfather. The character's full name was Santino. And Sonny Bono's full name was Salvatore (though the Salvatores I have know have gone by Salvie...).

Definitely not. Maybe as a nickname for when he is small, maybe. But definitely go with a name that you really love that he can grow into.

I agree, even Sonny Corleone wasn't just named Sonny! Santino is on our list

Speaking of the Godfather, I asked DH what he thought about the name Luca. His response? "Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes." Guess that's off our list.
