Making Plums for baby ?

Did your plums end up kind of tart/sour? I don't know if I just didn't do it right, or if that's just the way they are. I'm not a big plum eater so, I have no idea if it was because of the ones I got or something else.

I tasted the puree before I froze it, and it was a little tart, but nothing more than anything else. But after I froze it and let it thaw to eat, it ended up really tart. DD made a really funny face and pushed anything I tried to give her out of her mouth.

Can someone help with this? What kind of plums do I need to get. I get all of the recipes from wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com. It didn't specify any particular type of plum.

TIA ladies!

  • The same thing happened to me when I made peaches, so I will be curious to see if anyone has any tips or advice.

  • For myself, I prefer red plums over white (the inside color). The red ones seem to be sweeter.

Make sure they're ripe. If they're still really solid they need to ripen up a little more. They should be firmish... not hard, but not squishy. Kind of like an avocado if  you're familiar with those.

ETA: I haven't made them for DS yet, so I have no advice on the flavor changing along the way.

My peaches did the same thing as well, but then I tried Gerber peaches a few times, and DD does not like them at all. So, I didn't even think to mention that as well.

I'll check them out tonight when I go get fruits. I believe I got the red plums (inside) but they may have not been ripe enough. They gave only very slightly. The store I went to had the smallest selection of fruit ever.

Haha. I hate when that happens. The one time I need [insert produce here] is the one time the store decides to let the stock run down so they can clean the bins.

If you got the red, try the white. Some people prefer one over the other.

I know plums taste the best (and sweetest) when you bite into them and juice runs everywhere. Dammit... now I want some plums.

Haha! Sorry for your craving! I don't even eat them that often and they sound good to me.

Confession - I like sour stuff, so I ate one, okay two, of her frozen cubes. They were like little plum Popsicles.  YUMMY!

  • DS hates fruit so far. I've tried nectarines, peaches, plums, and he hates all of it. I thought it was because the plums were kinda tart, but the nectarines weren't tart at all. They were delish. I even have a video of him saying his first word... "BLEH," after he tried the nectarines. Haha!

My dad's advice? "Let's add some honey to it!" Thank god I was there when that went down.

ETA: I tried cutting it with breastmilk and with cereal. He still hated the fruits. What I'm gonna do is just keep giving him veggies and hold off a little bit on the fruits. Maybe their palates just need to develop a little bit.

  • I used pluots and steamed them when they were REALLY ripe. They turned out very sweet.

  • the plums are a bit tart, but if you buy white peaches they are sweet after you cook them.
