routine blood testing

For those of you that know what you were tested for, did you get drug tested?

My doctor office sends you out for blood/urine testing and I noticed on my paper she had me tested for all sorts of drugs. I was given the paper by the nurse and the doctor took it to make some changes to it at the end of my appointment. I hadn't looked at it before, so I don't know what changes she made. Now I feel like my doctor thinks I'm a druggie.

Re: routine blood testing

  • I didn't get any drug tests on mine, but I apparently got tested for every STD out there from Hep B&C to syphilis to HIV and more, lol. My doc said that it was routine in her office to test everyone for everything, "just in case". Maybe your doc does the same with drug screenings?

  • That is an odd test. I have been through 3 pregnancies(3 different ob practices) and that was never part of the routine testing. Maybe that is routine for your ob. Honestly I would have asked.

  • Hmm... I didn't get drug testing.  Are you going to a doctor that has a largely inner city practice?  That might influence what is routine in that office.  I think it's part of the screening in the hospital where I work, which is in a downtown urban setting.  There's just such a large population that uses drugs there, and things like cocaine can cause a lot of complications (duh).  My doctor did test me for all of the STDs, though.  I would have been absolutely thunderstruck if I had tested positive for something because I'm 33, have never had a STD, never had an abnormal pap test, am married, and have had a grand total of 3 partners in my llifetime (TMI. sorry).  I suppose it makes my doctor feel better, so I said okay.

  • My dr (who also was my SILs dr up to 17 wks) tested her for drugs during her pregnancy and it showed she was positive for marijuana and something else. He called her out on it and she switched drs. Guilty as charged. I was hoping they would threaten to take her baby when born, but they didnt. To this day shes still the same. Its sickens me!!! I wish they wouldve/couldve done more about it :(

I think some drs may do a drug screen just to know what they are up against.

  • All the other tests marked are routine prenatal tests; like the STD checking and a urinalysis(preeclampsia runs in my family).

Just that one seems out of the ordinary. If she added something, that seems to be it. I'm a pretty skinny girl and she made a comment about me being so little but it didn't seem like a mean comment. I know for a fact I'll come up clean for all of them. I don't do any drugs or take any medications beside tylenol.

I'm being tested for cocaine, codeine, morphine, amphetamines/methamphetamines, marijuana/THC, PCP, barbiturates, and benzodiazepines. That seems like a little much for a routine drug testing.

  • In my field of work we drug screen people all the time, and testing for all of those drugs is routine.  It covers the range of street and over the counter drugs.  I don't think I got a drug screen as part of my bloodwork ( and I am in a big city with a large drug using population) but if your doc does screen all pts for substances, what you got would be considered routine.
