switching to soy formula because LO had these symptoms...

For those who switched to Soy formula I was wondering what kind of symptoms did your LO have to make you switch and did it help?

Re: switching to soy formula because LO had these symptoms...

  • We actually had to switch to a hypoallergenic formula because LO had these symptoms: fussiness while feeding, arching back in pain while feeding, crying out and pulling away from the bottle but still wanting to eat (these are all symptoms of a milk protein allergy that would warrant a switch to soy). He also had blood in his stools, which is a sign of a soy protein allergy which warranted the switch to Nutramigen. If he had hives or congestion, that would also be a sign. Switching helped immediately. The blood in the stools took a week to go away though.

I'm curious; how much blood was in LO's stool? DH noticed a few little spots of blood in DD's diaper this afternoon. It's the first time we've seen it & it was a little alarming. Also, do you know what hives look like on an infant?

  • I don't have anything to say about the symptoms (I really belive that my LO was misdiagnosed), but just watch for constipation with the soy formula.  That's the only problem we had with it.
  • First, our little one had a lot of straining, crying, and screaming when trying to have a bowel movement.  He also had gas and a streak of brown in his diaper, but didn't actually produce a bowel movement. This later turned into super runny stools. The doctor said he was constipated and than had diarrhea from the milk-based formula and wanted him on soy.  Sad to say...but mommy is lactose intolerant and may have passed this on.
