TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

May I move over here a few weeks early? (Ticker warning)

Hi ladies,

I had a m/c in March and have been TTC since then with no luck. I am so sick of everyone telling me to "relax and it will happen" or that "stressing out about getting pregnant makes your ovulation cycles all wonky" and all the other wonderful advice people have. I'm no longer charting because it's just way too depressing to see a BFN every month after being sure that "this is the month."

My question is- is it time to meet a fertility specialist? Is it too soon? I know I'm Oing because I've been taking OPTs (haven't this month because I'm boycotting them and temps) and I've had a positive every month.

I'm just so frustrated at this point and don't know what to do. My OB says that I need to wait until next March before doing anything and nobody will give me any more advice than that!!!

Thanks for reading my vent.

  • Oh and my OB said if I meet the fertility doc at the practice, all they will do is check my progesterone levels and she said if I'm getting + OPTs the progesterone level check won't do me any good. Is that true? If so, what tests should I ask them to do?

  • Welcome to the board.  IMO it is never too early to talk to a RE, the process seems to take forever, so the sooner you start it the sooner you may be on your way to a healthy pregnancy.

    GL!

No. RE's will test all kinds of things.  Do you chart?  You can still have a progesterone problem and O -thus getting a +OPK.  Your charts should tell you more about your cycles.  RE's don't just test progesterone- they test all types of things...and look at your reproductive system.  It just sounds like your OB doesn't want you going to an RE b/c you would be going somewhere else.  Personally I would never have gotten where I am if it wasn't for the RE.  Besides that, RE's are much more specialized and know more about reproduction than OB's who specialize in giving birth.

  • Thanks for the support and encouragement! I am not charting right now because it just got really depressing and stressful when I WAS charting. I am going to start temping again during my next cycle. I just needed a break.

The RE my OB set me up with is in the same practice so I don't know why she said they don't usually see people until after 1 year of unsuccessful TTC. She said because I was pregnant (even though I miscarried) it shows I am fertile and capable of having it happen again, and because I'm under 30 "I have time" so they won't do a lot right away. Argh.

  • Welcome to the board. I don't think it's ever too early to see an RE. I haven't had an appointment yet, but when my OB put me on clomid she also put me on the waitlist for the fertility clinic "just in case". GL!
  • How long were you trying before your m/c in March? REs generally don't see people until they've been trying unsuccessfully for at least a year. Because for it to take up to a year is normal. Having a baby who's about 16 months old, one m/c,and just a few cycles trying post-m/c does NOT sound like reason to be alarmed. At all. I honestly doubt there's much a doctor would see a need to test for at this point. As one of the IF girls has had in her siggy for quite some time, impatience is not a fertility problem.

I believe the rule of thumb to see an RE is under 30 you need to be TTC for a year.  Over 30 it is 6 months.  So since you are under 30, I would wait a year before going to one.

  • We were trying for about 7 months before the m/c but I suspected that BFing was making my cycles irregular. You're spot on with the impatience bit- I just need to take a step back for a bit =)

Was just curious because of hearing about people seeing REs after 6 months..

Most people who RE's will see that soon *know* there's a problem that need fixing - PCOS or endo or anovulation or whatever. I'd really recommend charting again, for informational purposes only - not to drive yourself nutso - to really get a good grip on what's going on and if your cycles have normalized after breastfeeding.
